Has anyone had any problems with their TD5 over heating?!
My 2000 model is building pressure and is using up the water but we don't know where it is going. There is no trace of the water in the oil & no water lying under the car. I'm completely baffled by this..

Any info would be fab!

Cheers :D

Hi td5s normally leak water from the radiator this is quite a common fault also rear of water pump hard to see from top need to lay on your back also the head does move and can also pressure up the cooling system, when the head moves it does not always put oil in the water and vice versa, get a block test done before any serious damage is done, because if the head does move the valves will hit requiring a new head and possibly block, the head moves due to plastic dowels being used hope this helps, tiga

Hi tigapiglet, can i ask how common is this head moving thing on td5's, is it something we are all going to get clobbered with or just the odd few, also were all td5 engines from start to finish fitted with plastic dowels to locate head on block? thanks.

hi it is quite a common fault some td5s have had the head gasket replaced and new metal dowels replaced, but all old gaskets had plastic dowels and you cant tell till the heads off im afraid, not sure when plastic was changed to metal as i dont do a lot of engine work in the workshop normally electrics hope this helps tiga.

Sye my 99 TD5's just in with the same problem now, they thought it was the gasket on its way out but when they took the head off they found it needed skimming so they sent it away to be checked and found it had a crack in the head and nawt they could do, so it's a new head and a bill for £1700 sorry for the bringer of bad news.

Hi can anyone help me please, my 2000 td5 disco is overheating within a 10 minute journey. The water in the coolant tank is staying cold i have no heat from inside car heater. So i know water isn't circulating, ive changed thermostat and temp switch but still overheating there is no milk in rocker cover and im not losing water from rear. Does this sound like head gasket or water pump not working. Nutty

Thanx mastermac would that just be a case of taking top hose off and seeing if water is pumping out. Sorry if i sound a bit dimmy guys learning all the time.

Hi Mastermac is it just a case of taking top hose off and seeing if pump is working learning all the time. Cheers

better of taking it out and getting it checked properly would do it anyway if getting h/g done. blocked rad or duff water pump could be cause of h/g failure
