Hi all, yesterday I went out to a job and everything was fine. On the way back however, I found it hard to get into 3rd, especially when slowing throught the gears.

Car still went fine, although the gears seem a bit more 'clunky' and when I got home I noticed that the gear lever at rest was positioned over to the left side instead of the centre position (although I can't hand on heart say it hasn't always been like this).

Anyone got any idea of causes as it seems to be a lever position issue rather than the gears themselves as it fells like the lever is being 'forced' to the left during changes causing it to miss the gear slot, if you get what I mean.

Are the selectors and other gear change mechanisms accessible through the centre console on Disco's or is it a more major operation to get at them to have a look?

Hi Mr Triumph, if you mean that your manual gearbox gear lever rests between 1st and second, rather than 3rd and 4th, then you have a bias plate problem.

There are 2 springs which control where the lever rests and these springs are supported by the upstand part of the bias plate - this upstand bit of metal breaks off so the springs don't work right.

New plate is about £4 and fits at the bottom end of the gear lever. To do the job you need to take out the centre console. It's not as daunting as it might sound and takes about 20 mins to do.

Do a search for "replacing gearbox bias plate" or similar.

Hi Mr Triumph, "Monsieur" thebiglad is a genius:D, believe him.....but if u are already in there do the whole job and replace this FRC9985 BUSH GEAR CHANGE PIVOT | Discovery 2 1998-2004: Transmission | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series too......it's under the plate and it wont hurt ...even it is not broken it could be threaded.
