My FL wouldnt start while luke warm.. Spin spin spin for 5 mins and still no joy. Then, a quick squirt of 'easy start' and brum brum! Told that the tank pump not working.... Dont know how he (the aa man) knows without looking or testing it! anyway, it now starts every time! any ideas please???

ps... wonder if I'm imagining it, but when it wouldnt start, I cant remember hearing the lift pump (nearside inner wing under bonnet) running.. It is now and the FL starts every time...

On the backside of the fuel filter/pump housing there is an earthlead, make sure it is connected correctly. Don't know whether it would stop the pump to operate but it's possible it is barely connected and with the vibration of the running engine giving better contact until the next time it fails again ?? Just a wild guess of course.

UPDATE!!!! LR started fine this mornng!!.. Drove 50 miles with several (5) stop/starts inc a variety of 'cooling off' periods. Pump (under bonnet) ran up every time the ignition key was turned. Engine fired on the button!! so much for the AA mans "pump in the tank has packed up" comment.... Watch this space............ Ta for the feedback..........

change ya fuel filter if it aint bin done [check that connection willo was on about,at same time] if it happens again, switch on ingnition only[yes i know its a doosle,ok glow plugs on] and put your hand on that same pump[lift pump] should run for 15 seconds then stop, if you do not get this then change the fuel pump relay and check the fuse as well, if it still dont do it [and youve changed the filter, could well be yer rear pump. . . . . .oh un best of luck. . . .:) :) :)

Thanks Will... R U into Spitfires??? Enrico

Hi Enrico,

No, but ming likes them a lot so to be helpful to him (he tries constantly to upload Spit, Hurricane and all kind of pictures of WW II as the guy is crazy about that era but still unable to upload whatever, in spite of all his attempts/efforts, via PM's asking other UK people to push him a little in the right direction but no use so far...:D ) I took one as my avatar (for a while).

Hi Will, I work part time in a hanger that has 3 spits... 2 have wings removed and the 3rd is 75% together.

Thanks Ming.... The lift pump (under bonnet) runs every time as you describe...I've pulled the relay in/out and the pump stops/starts every time (so it should).. Swapped the relay around for another of the same spec. Filter was changed at last service. Next I'm going to look at the location of the tank pump and have a listen... What confuses me is why have 3 pumps in the 1st place? why have a tank pump?

No spitfires, but they are restoring a hurricane at Brooklands museum in weybridge, well worth a visit for all petrolheads. As a side note have a look on youtube, search for Brooklands merlin, they have got a fully running merlin engine on, basically, a metal pallet.
