I bought my 90 last month, 103000 miles.

I have no service history at all, so I dont know if the timing belt has ever been done.

What is the interval for it on this engine? I suppose I will have to get it booked in to have it done.

Is there any way of telling if it has ever been done?

The mileage is genunine despite being 1993, it was on a farm doing very low miles, I can see that from the online MOT records for the past 5 years - and that same owner had it 15 years altogether.

Aye I would stick a new one on to be sure. Once you know it's been done most peeps sem to go with evry 40k or so. Changing the timing belt every year whether it needs it or not is just a waste of time and money.

any idea what a local garage would be likely to charge for doing this?

I can handle a lot of stuff, but this is out of my comfort zone.

hi mate,

i had mine stretch and skip on me a few months after i bought it! my advice is if you do not know then it is best to do it. i tried to make mine last/didn;t really think about it. it went on the way to the ferry port so you can guess the outcome!!

it is actually a very easy job, it just seems worse than it is! if you have a socket set then you can do it, just remember to mark up the old belt and then match it to the new one striaght swap.

piece of mind is worth every penny.

trying to remember, it was a healthy days work, 3 hours or so if you know what you are doing. but a good day if not. if your devon way i would be happy to help and offer advice.

there are tons of guides on the net as well.

oh, and i should mention. for me.
new belt = £10 or so
new tensioner = £15 or so
rebooking ferry ticket = £260
low loader to take me home = £100
missus blaming me = priceless- it was very funny coz it was raining and it was our first holiday we could afford in 3 years. due to the costs of getting recovered we couldn't do everything we wanted

anyhow my point is it is in the scope of a diyer and is worth doing if you are unsure

Yes just set aside a saturday order the bits and get it done. It isn't difficult and there's loads of help on here. Get yourself a workshop manual and you can follow it step by step. I had one go on a transit van I used to have and was towing a boat at the time. Not the best time to find out the TAC wouldn't recover trailers but at least I wasn't on my way to a family holiday like steve above, OUCH!
