Hi all, im on the lookout for a budget 200 tdi for my 90!

Im looking for something i can restore back to brilliance bit by bit over the winter.

Been keeping an eye out for discoverys as of late and recently spotted one in my local paper which he is practically giving away

... SO heres the catch along with my stupid question.

Is it at all possible to restore an 200 tdi engine with timing belt gone or am i only dreaming?

Easy - probabaly needs 8 new push rods and a belt - I had a timing belt go at 75mph, it was on the road and good as ever 20 hours later.

Looking for one at present - having stupid argument with Lancasters at the moment about insurance costs - but when thats fixed am looking for one - i live in London, but could pop up to collect it.

Is it disco or defender? and do you have the rad and intercooler?

Its a Disco engine, no rad or itnercooler or alternator, delivery is no problem or collection whatever is easier its bloody heavy. You aint lifting this out yourselves its a crain job. Tis a strong engine in good nick the turbo impeller is good no movement in it like some I have seen and quoted as being good. Will need a cambelt cos last one is unknown. Jai

thats a pity, thanks for the offer though jai!

While we're on the subject does 400 seem reasonable? its been parked up for 2 years and the interior is bad (doesnt bother me but looking to haggle!)

If the engine is not running I would say going by disco prices thats a bit high, although he probably knows that for about £30 and a few hours work it can be made to run again.

I would expect to pay £500-600 for a fully running Disco, and thats one I could put on the road.

400 quid is too much. For 400 quid you should be buying one that's driveable, maybe just failed it's test or maybe stlll has a test on it for a bit. If it's been standing for two years there'll be all sorts of stuff wrong with it and you've no means of testing any of it to see if it works. Ther emight be more wrong with the engine than he says. I recently bought a 200 tdi disco that had just failed it's mot on rust, with a very nice running recon engine and everything working for 310 of your english pounds. I've paid more for worse ones but it shows what you can get if you look around.

i was askin 300 for engine minus alternator and know people will say its high but the engine is good and I spent time removing it properly without causing damage etc I reckon I can get that sort of money when I'm next at a meet and certain i want to sell.

A conversion done propperly will cost around 600 to 700 quid unless you have lots of bits kicking about and or much time and skill to fabricate bits yourself. Mine was in and oit the workshop in a weekend. My hoses alone were about 100 quid, 300 quid engine, 100quid exhaust pipe discoDefenderconversion down pipe, steve parker temp sender, Rad I already had, various pipework kicking about, new waterpump, etc but it all adds up. Unless you have no time scale these conversions do genuinly cost that sort of money. No doubt somone has dropped one in for about 200 quid and made an abortion of it but I wanted mine done once and to be able to get all pipework off the shelf incase i ever ended up on expedition.

Yeah i agree, im a student so money is a important factor but luckily time isnt. my 90 is running perfect as a 4 cyl. petrol for now and i would like to learn a bit more hands on stuff about engines so hopefully a slow bit by bit recondition will suit me. also i recently bought a welder and have access to a neighbours fabrication workshop so that should save me some expense hopefully! Thanks for all d advice im learnin loads here!!

ive just finished a conversion
275 for complete running disco
110 for clutch and rear crank seal intercooler 90bend and a cupple of other bits
if you can do the work your self then its a cheap conversion
cheaper than repair of your old slow crap d/dt engine
but well worth doing a full service with toothed belt while the engine is out
