it fires up but wont run, i susspect my lift pump is shaged as no fuel is getting to my filter weather you use the hand primer or turn the engine over with the key, my next step was to put the fuel pipe that supplys the main pump in a jerry can to see if it will start then, but what i want to no is be for i flatten my batterie from trying to start it is will the pump suck any fuel up or does it soley rely on the lift pump to push the fuel to the main pump thanks.

I don't know about whether the fuel injection pump will be able to suck any fuel up, I'd guess it would, but finding out if the pipework and fuel lift pump are O.K. is easy. Just pull the fuel inlet pipe off the injectror pump and crank the engine over. If there's no fuel coming out then test the fuel pickup in the tank and all the pipework for blockages and leaks.

Some pumps dont have a transfer pump and rely on the 7 psi from the lift pump, especially if its an old roto diesel, bosch's are ok and will vacuum.
I have run a diesel without the lift pump, put some diesel in a pop bottle wth a bit of airline or fuel hose down to the pum, if you have a head of a few feet it'll work at least at idle.
