Hello chaps, as some of you know I'm putting a tdi into my TD 110, so I'm looking for a Disco donor nearby. I'm currently just looking on eBay, but I'm a bit worried that most of them on there have mileages of 150k, 175k and 200k+ on them. The 110 is going to be used by me to go to Morocco later in the year, so I need a good one that isn't going to blow up on me. Basically what I'm asking is whether I should be steering clear of the high mileage engines and trying to find a lower mileage example. I've got my conversion kit, tools, mates and time all I need now is an engine. :D:D Cheers :D

depends if they have been looked after or not..

a 200 engine with 230k miles can be as good as one with 50k that has been trashed...

mine has 212k... (altough I think it's a second engine)

Ok. When I'm looking at Disco's, is there anything I should look out for regarding the engines? I know the obvious stuff - checking the oil and water for sludge, looking for excessive smoke and listening to it, but what else?

try to have a drive if yer can. Have a look at the engine does it look like its been worked on? A weekly check on coolant, etc will mean the filler cap shouldnt be covered in ****e/mud/dust. Do the filters look new?

I've had a 200tdi with 202 thousand on it that was spot on, and I've had one with 120 thou that smoked like a bitch. Mileage isn't a good indicator of the condition it all depends how they've been treated.

i guess you should be looking for it to be clear on tic over after the puff of black smoke, mine does a puff then completly clears :D dunno if thats of the norm though haha

Ok. The one I'm looking at starts with a puff of blue/black smoke and then clears its throat straight away, and doesn't smoke at all during driving. Reckon this sounds alright? I know that the blue smoke can be caused by the valve stem seals letting oil drip down into the cylinders, but is this likely to be a big problem in the near future?

I might be going to pick up my donor Disco in a couple of days; are there any other things I can check when I get there to make sure the engine is a good'un? It has full service history but is rotted through.

I want to see it start from cold, not warm, to make sure it doesn't smoke too much. What other signs would there be if it was a bad lump?

Cheers

Just look in all the usual places for gasket failures, i'd let it stand 15 mins running, see how the temp is....is it driveable? See how it is on a 15min run, check temps again, any rattles, smoke...any big/little end knocking...

Aye it's drivable, even still has MOT. What exactly does knocking sound like on a diesel, and how's the best way to detect it? It would be much easier to detect it on a petrol I take it...

It sounds like 2 bits of wood being knocked together...as bob says drive it...the engine should sit evenly at idle, if that makes sense...

Righto. I'll also be breaking the Disco once I have all the bits I need from it, which bits are worth taking off to sell and how much d'ya reckon I can make from them?

Cheers
