The government has scrapped ideas to do mot's every 2 years, they reckon garages don't do them good enough as it is and also possible job losses

probably not actually a bad idea, a lot of people have no idea how there car works and the MOT picks up a lot of faults, which, in an emergency could result in the vehicle not performing as designed, i think yearly works.

I don't like paying,but I think it's good it's been scrapped.
My 1997 Disco was mot'd yesterday and failed on 300 quids worth of work,
it was mot'd at a land rover dealer last year, and a local garage yesterday, and although I do work when needed, its surprising what can turn up over a year.
I think a lot of people would not maintain them until the next mot
On older cars not maintained 2 years would probably see a lot of cars scrapped, because of a build up of faults and possible costs to repair.
The new minister, said she was worried that garages were not doing a good enough job, as it is, and also she was worried to the possible loss of income and possible job losses

I always use a local MOT only test centre which offers free re-tests - my theory is they at least won't fail something on the basis they will get the repair job off it.
They are happy for me to be around when they do the MOT and have a poke around while it is up on the ramps and discuss any concerns with them before failing or putting an advisory down. (they rarely get cars over 10 years old so a 1964 is a bit strange for them!)

It's only £50 a year - any repairs off the back of that you should be doing anyway, so, for £50 a year i'm fairly happy with the mot as it is.

my brother in law is now out in spain , they have 2 year tests.... but the test centres dont do repairs... i think they are government run .... did hear hear a tale of a woman driver being pulled out the car for the tester to get in and stamp harder on the brake pedal to get it passed.

Yeah that was my theory too, until we got one of our discos done, and discovered the local "MOT only" place is in cahoots with the local landy garage, and given him loads of work!:mad: since found out MOT is untrusted by all the other local garages as well now! I will be sticking to major chain companies from now on to avoid this crud.

They have two years here in france and even then its a silly test i mean they dont even look for rust lol exhaust was ****ed on our wee fiat(i maen huge holes) the ct centre marked it as a advisory nothing like the uk test and there is some right buckets on the road mot for a classic motor is every 5 years lol and mots for bikes is only advised not compulsary but on newer cars they all get the ecu tested and faults read for abs airbags and the like

Ah yeh, that's all bad.

Don't ever use the halfrauds auto centres though... they blew up my mondeo on the emissions test (over reved it for too long) - wouldn't ever admit to it, but, was told by two other garages what they will have done wrong.

They seemed quite shocked when they rung me a year later to remind me and book me in for an MOT when all they got was a s**t load of abuse down the phone from me. c**ks.

Ffs dont ever use these large chain type places they dont have a fooking clue i had my jeep in there once at **** fit and they failed it on a hole in the chassis leg/unibody it took me 20 mins and a manager to convince the mot guy that this said hole has been there from the factory as its there to allow water to escape my uncle had problems aswell plus my mates bmw fail as they said the abs didnt work and it needed new shoes and pads eh it didnt have abs and the pads were new like three days they also wouldnt let it back for a retest as they were too busy

Oh great. So the small locals try and screw you over, and the large chains are twits. Any decent MOT stations out there hiding themselves away? I'm sure there are, but they're lost amongst the rubbish ones. Its like garages. I spent years finding a decent garage, then 6 months later the guy moves to Australia! I must smell or something!:eek::D

Just ask on here if there are people local who can recomend one ask friends family co workers if a few say the same place then give that place a go

Nobody has even mentioned actual road safety..... In the last couple of years where there have been 'proper' winters, the amount of salt has done an amazing amount of damage to cars. The number of rusty brake pipes I have seen and done is way more than I ever remember.Disco 3's are the latest ones to be seen - looks like a body off job to do some of them.
A few posts back it was mentioned to ask around for a good MOT place - good advice, works with most things.
And dont forget,if you go into a place full of attitude, dont be suprised if the tester finds a reason to fail rather than give an advisory and some friendly advice on how to sort it.

so if the 2 year MOT has been scrapped ....has anyone heared owt on the rumor of the 30 year rolling tax exenption comeback or has that gone up the swannie aswell

What do you mean comeback if its 30 years oldits tax exempt

not in this country since 1998 it was froze to being anything built before jan 1973 is tax exempt i heared a lot of talk mainly in the MG and mini restorers community that it may be resumed as 30 year rolling exemption but i havent heared anything for a few months :confused::confused:

but i have had an invite by fairfuel uk to go to the house of commons on the 7 th of feb to speak to mp's about fuel prices and fuel tax rates as theyve collected over 1 milion votes in the uk and the first 100 that signed last year got invited sadly instead i wrote a letter to them stating i couldnt attend as the price of fuel just wont allow it coupled with parking and vehicle charges for driving in london :(:(:(

It was always a 25 year rolling tax, I wonder where 30 years came from?

No chance of it happening, on the plus side (and as the owner of 2 pre 1973 vehicles) it does help with the value :)

I think it is more likely they will scrap it all together than bring it back, best just to keep quiet and let people with real classics enjoy it
