2 questions: battery box and socks on dash

Hi

a couple of questions I need some help on please. This is on my 1994 300tdi 90 CSW

I am going through the process of taking out my old battery a weak and died 072 and replacing it with a much bigger 110a battery as recommended by a few of you on here. Only had the land a few weeks so relatively surprised to discover the battery is held in with a strip of wood and a decorators cloth dust sheet!!!!

So where in here would the retaining brackets normally go? If not a normal retaining bracket what can I do?

Secondly - what is this socket on the dash that looks like a headphone socket of a 1980s hi-fi.

Sorry second image won't load always but it is a headphone like socket above the temp and air direction slider on the heater.

The top photo is a vent too.... well vent the battery box. Don't think there was any bracket to hold the battery down issued as standard. You can get after market ones which are worth putting in, especially if you fancy a dual battery set up.

That second picture is some aftermarket add on looks like a simple cable aperture/orifice can't remember what they are actually called.

There are two hooked rods that catch into holes in the box floor. These rods are threaded at the other end, the threads poke through a piece of angle steel which locates on the longer edge of the battery. Couple of nuts on those rods are used to clamp the angle and thus, the battery to the box floor.

The only holes in the box floor are these grid ones. Are they the right ones ? The ones at the front are rusted through. So I may need to get an alternative solution.

looks like a 1/4" jack socket.

That’s what I thought. Like an amplifier. What would it be for on a landie?

The slots in the base of the battery box are for the battery retaining bracket, there are two long J shaped bolts that hook into those slots and an angle bracket bolts onto the top of those J bolts clamping against the top edge of the battery.

That’s not true, there were long J shaped threaded rods that hook into those vent slots and then using a plate on top the battery is held down.

Well, depends if it's a speaker out or a line out. Could either be for hooking up an amp to the speakers (in mono most likely) or the previous owner liked to play guitar in his car.

So if mine are rusted through I would need to fix a new plate over them to strengthen? If I’m using a much bigger battery a 640SHD Yuasa would the stock system still work.

Is that right? Learn something new every day.

Given how often battery boxes rust out I’d still fit an after market one.

Looks like a 12v 2 way toggle switch with the toggle snapped off, unscrew the screws either side of the dash brinicle
& see what's inside it.

so finally took dash binnacle out as part of fixing wipers.... and this was inside - so still a headphone jack in my mind

May have used headphones instead of speakers from radio. At least he,d hear it.

Yep - stereo jack - could be input or output - @Landy_Ben what was it connected to - not sure the mains flex would do much for sound quality

nothing it was chopped off the picture was as it came out of defender
