Here's the plan on my D2 v8, going for lpg, with tanks up under the sill (ES spec, so side steps in place) this to keep the full size tank and not have the tank in the boot (space issues and having the tank by the dog..., rather ride the bomb!!! Like Peter Sellers) so rear air bags going cos compressor in the way, great opportunity to put a 2 inch lift on (getting the side steps and tanks further up out of the way) and some bigger 50/50 or even 80/20 tyres on. I know the issues with the longer brake pipes, the spacer for the cross member and bump stops, but my questions are;

1. What effect does a 2 inch lift on ACE have?, really don't want to lose it.
2. Can you buy the chassis spacers commercially, or do they have to be fab'ed?
3. Putting a hefty metal front bumper on with a NAS receiver for a winch when off road, light rear load - don't tow much and very light when I do (dinghy), just me and the Jack Russell inside and the 2x 36l lpg sub tanks, so what springs and shocks do you recommend?
4. Currently running 255/65/16, what size could I go to with the lift without further mods?

Thanks in advance for you input.

Could you not replace the fuel tank with LPG tanks and have a small auxiliary petrol tank under the offside rear wheel arch? It'd give you vastly better ground clearance and it would lessen the chance of one of your LPG tanks slipping it's straps...

Thanks, but I have disregard that idea for the following reasons;

1. £450 extra for one of those tanks
2. As I'm keeping the side steps and because of the size of lpg tank I'm going for they won't hang down below the sills, anyway I can always design and have made up a pair of tank/sill guards
3. 70-80 mile range on the auxiliary tank
4. Replacing a perfectly sound petrol tank

Now I can always relocate the compressor, not hard to do, but I'm not that fussed about having air - don't really tow and I didnt buy a D2 for a smooth ride, would have gone for a jag if i was looking for that!!, quite like the ACE though, that does seem to work better than my D1

you sort of contradict yourself! no air, but still want ace, smooth ride a jag, now you want economy! why not a diesel, if it was me, i wouldn't bother with LPG, a lot of cost for nothing, stay as you are, stick the 2" lift on and enjoy

I'm start to wish I hadn't bothered asking, I getting views off topic but no answers, ACE deals with cornering (roll), air deals with smoothness (resonance). I didn't ask about lpg, I didn't go for diesel (which two of my cars are, so not anti diesel) because I like the sound and smoothness of a v8, I like and know the buick engine because I have it in a tvr and I have had it in other cars over the last 20 years, heck I even wrote a paper on the engine in college, also I got the car for £1650!! the d2 is a toy, covering 3-5k per year, so ROI is about year, even less with the recent price drops in lpg in my area, btw I'm keep the car long term and finally I like lpg, again had it before, so the bottom line is I'm getting a lovely sound track with the long term running costs equivalent of mid 30's mpg

ok! see your point, i would keep the air, move the compressor, keep the ace, but you would have to fit really heavy duty springs and shocks for a dog that big!!! lol

If I was you I would relocate the compressor to the space at the side of the petrol tank, whichever Side is easiest.

Put tank or sill guards on, preferably something full length of the tanks just so they don't get scratched and start to rust or get dented by rocks etc.

Can you keep air and have 2" lift, you are going to the hassle of getting longer brake lines so moving the compressor isn't going to be too hard.

The ace, now I think it will chuck a fit but I don't really get how it works, I mean I know it pumps in fluid or takes it out depending on what it needs to do. Just get spacers or whatever it needs to make it work, that way you get the benefits of the 2" lift without sacrificing some of the good bits about the disco

Blimey!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8 posts and already got a bad attitude. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'd keep the air as it works side by side with the ACE IMO.

My D2 has had on an off issues with the ACE and when its active its great when it ****s itself the rear firms up like the ACE does, making the ride jolty, I don't know if its connected but it certainly feels like they are when driven.

Thanks loud and proud, ACE and air shouldn't be connected, they have separate ecus and the d2 could be had with ACE and air separately or together in different markets

Soloby Rob, if you are ask somebody the time and they tell you what the weather is, then you are going to non plused as well, just because I have 8 posts on THIS forum am I supposed to grateful that I get off topic views that I should have got a diesel and not answers to the questions post, instead this post has gone off at a tangent about v8, lpg and air springs...

This model i have now is the first without ace, Really miss it, but i have got air, works OK now i have changed the bags, but will leave it on,
just get the lift done and see how it goes.

Thanks discodriver, I have decide to pop a spring & shock kit on for now as I have to get the compressor out of the way asap and I'm currently too busy at work to fab a frame/plate for the compressor and extend/balance the pipes, if I really hate the springs, then I can plumb the air back in when I have time again (btw the reason I not too keen on air as I've had other LR products with air... out of fairness that was mainly ecu issues) does anybody about the tyres and spacers please?

are you staying with series 2 disco alloys, steels or moving up to disco 3 alloys
what sort of pattern, off road, road or a good allrounder?
i know tyres are a mine field!! the 16 " tyres give a good ride and all variants available, try a quick search on here also ebay for different sizes, then read on the info you have, some on here have a good combination, aud vein pet has a good set look good but disco 1!! good luck

sideways,dont get annoyed,tis the way of this forum,things always seem to go of topic,but you will get the correct answers eventually.just have faith.:D:D

Sticking with the standard 16 ES alloys, they look ok to me and having come from series LR and RR classics, I like a bit of sidewall for protection! The marix panther looks favourite at the mo, BF AT remould, but not a daily ride and most driving below 70, and comes as 65 profile, but like the real deal... BF AT, trouble is nearly twice the price and I can only find 70 profile, if it was a daily car or had a family in it then would get the BFs. But I still weighing up a 80/20 like the kingpin amazon, but concerned about the drone and road handling. Starting to see why the girlfriend takes so long picking out shoes...

Thanks gemsdad for words of wisdom, I'm a member of quite a few car and motorbike forums for many years so used to having the pee extracted, but used to having somebody who has the T-shirt saying, you need xyz - or speak to Bob at so and so. Will keep the faith!
