Hi All
Just wanted to know your opinios on the 2.5td engine, don't really here much about it, Is it a reliable engine? Whats it like on fuel? has it got enough power to pull a 90 along up hills? and anything else like that.
Thanks Daniel

If you have one that has been well maintained they are no trouble, they are quicker at accelerating than 200/300tdi but lack a bit of lower grunt. 90 with Disco transfer box returns 30+ local and 33+ on a run, but with std transfer we where getting 25+ and 28+.

Trouble is it's a bit far for me to collect, what's involved in swapping the 2.5tdi for a 200tdi? Do any of the engine mounts need changing? If it wasnt a big job then i would do it but i have no idea what is involved.

i think its more or less a strait swap. engine mouts are the same between 90/110 and later defender. i think the blocks are nearly the same believe it or not just the 200 has some strenghtening ribs inserted into casting. wiring is the same apart from glow plug wiring. on a timer for 200tdi lump. intercooler pluming is where you will find trouble if you use a disco tdi lump as opposed to the fender lump. same with the exaust system. try and find fender lump if you want 200tdi in there. its all possible just easier with fender to 90 than disco to 90, or 110:)

Take it you didn't buy the V8 then:rolleyes: I've got a 2.5td in my 110. It's basically the n/a diesel with a turbo added so is a simple old thing. Mines done 135,000 and it's fine, not as powerful as a tdi but will cruide at 70 all day. I get about 25mpg with standard gearing but I don't go creeping around trying to squeeze every last mile out of a tankful so could probably do better. I changed the oil about 4000 miles ago and it hasn't used a drop since and doesn't leak any either. I'm quite happy with it but when it finally does expire I'll definitely stick a tdi in to replsce it.

No I decided not to go for the v8 it looked like it had been parked in the sea for a month or 2, thats how bad the rust was. I have spotted a 90 just up the road which needs a bit of welding the she said it starts like a dream, the gearbox is fine. And the body work is ok. There is another thing i would like to know and that is there are a few types of seats you can have in the back, i like the high back ones that are similar to the seats that are in the front. Does anyone know if they are the same as the seats in the front or are they different ones, or have the one's i've seen been put in by someone.

221000 on the clock of mine. Original engine so the fella said. It feels like a nice powerfull engine. sounds ok too. Fun to drive. I think the engine will still be going long after the rest has perished.

bye

I've got a 2.5 N/A (no turbo) with 155,000 on the clock. It runs great with no leaks besides the oil filler cap if it is revved to hard. It is generally happy to run on a diesel / veg oil mix straight from the fuel tank with no extra kit, just takes a little longer to start up from cold that's all.

The only problem I have had is with regards to loss of power on hills. I had only been getting 15mph up some hills, and the speed massively decreased on the slightest incline on the motorway. I have since re-plumbed the fuel line changing the banjo nut, fuel filter, filter casing and seals and it is pulling up hills at 30-40mph. It's amazing how much an effect the slightest air leak can have on its performance.

The major downside with the 2.5 Turbo is that it is just a 2.5 N/A with a turbo block bolted on. It wasn't specifically designed to handle the extra power but it is perfectly capable. You may have to replace the odd push rod or crankshaft once in a while because they have a tendency to go under the extra strain.

Generally speaking it's a solid engine and very serviceable. You can get at everything you need to be able to get to without cutting your hands to bits. It's a strong performer, but it doesn't have the horsepower or the torque of a 200tdi or TD5 for example. I think it does have the fastest acceleration out of the lot if that's of any consolation!

Good luck

personaly still not sure danbuk. every td iv had has given me trouble:mad: whereas never had any issues with 2.5n/a or 200tdi. :) if i were you gonna buy one, buy it with a view to do an engine swap when you start getting stick off it. just my personal opinon.:D btw seriously considering 200tdi into my latest 90 that happens to be td:(

Hi Daniel,
I've got a 90 2.5td, they are well know for being abit lacking in power also depending on age they can be quite tempramental to start (mine is!) and do require a good heavy duty battery.
Hope that helps, just luv it through!!
cheers
Andrew
