hi all, ive got a 1987 90 fitted with the 2.5 na. although its a good engine it simply too gutless to do what i ask of it. ive been offered a 2.5vm lump out of a range rover with genuine 33,000 miles on the clock. there seems to be mixed opinions but from what i can gather aslong as i maintain it to the letter it should be fine. from what i can tell it'll fit straight onto a defender lt77 box but what about engine mounts? any advice and opinions please.

That vintage VM is a pile of ****- fit a 200 or 300 tdi

i wouldthough i have 2 problems with a 200tdi, 1 they have a timing belt (not something ive ever liked) 2 theyre very expensive well to me as im a student and like most i'm short on cash

Is a LR such a good idea while you are a student ? Why not park up/sell it till you have a need and income to run a 4wd.
The VM may be a gift now,but will cost loads over time. The timing belt on a 200/300TDI is absolutely NO problem.

Believe me mate, if you are daft enough to fit a Victor Meldrew engine you're gonna be well and truly bust afore you get through college. **** taking aside, forget the VM, they are a crock of ****.

its not a straight fit on defender box ,spigot as well as bell housing are different, they are prone for cracking heads ,but go well in good condition,

thanks for all your advice, ill give the VM a miss just exploring different options.
Is a LR such a good idea while you are a student ? Why not park up/sell it till you have a need and income to run a 4wd. as to your question, because i DO have a need for it i'm at an agricultural collage and live and work on farm and out of all suitable vehicles land rovers have the cheapest insurance.

Ask around, sure theres a few yokels who have converted.

You aint that far from me in worcestershire. Breaking a disco. May have 200tdi available soon

If its earning its keep on a farm why isnt it written into the farms books ? The cost of any repairs/mods are a totally valid business expense.
