Just been made to look a fool by my garage. I thought my 2.5 NA had a belt but apparently it has a chain.

Is this possible?
I thought it was only 2.25 that had chains?

Does this make a difference to how often they need replacing?

According to defender manual early 2.5 had a timing chain, looks like 10J version from what I can see.
What does your engine number start with?

2.5 petrols have chains ,all 2.5 diesels ive ever seen have belts though some fit after market gears

Well I reckon its aluminium because the garage were sending it off for skimming. Just don't know why they would say it had a chain? Thanks all

your having head gasket done as well ? head gasket and timing belt are totally seperate jobs unlike most modern engines were you may well change both whilst engines in bits ,but not on a 2.5

Yeh the cylinder heads cracked so I was advised to get the timing belt looked at too? I thought it would save me a bit seeing as the engine was already in bits?

it wont as removing head is as i said nothing to do with the timing belt unlike overhead cam engines, and a cracked head shouldnt be skimmed its pointless heads knackered unless its expertly repaired
