Hi,

Am looking at the possibility of a new Landy. This one is a 1966 with a 2.5 na diesel in it.

At present, it's got a mangled piston top (No. 2) and a crack in the block.

So I'm looking for advice.

How hard is it to extract a piston and replace? Additionally, would you opt for cold stitching, and if you have, where did you go?

Finally, would you just jack it in and buy a new engine (where?)

Thanks

J

wheres the crack ?changing a piston is easy enough but you do need to measure piston and bore to ensure they are within tolerance to each other, it might be better since blocks cracked to get another engine

Loads of people rip out the NA from defenders in favour of TDi lumps, you should be able to pick up a decent new engine reasonably cheaply.

I wouldn't bother trying to repair it, just slap a new one in

Find a good 12J or 19J and stick that in rather than faffing about stitching and changing pistons.

The question would be how did the piston get mangled in the first place?

+1
Saw one for sale at £50 recently, just needed an injection pump seal. Saves a lot of bother.

There's still plenty of perfectly good 12Js around since everyone wanted a tdi in their old 90/110. I'd just get a replacement engine and cannibalise the old one for anything useful. A 19J will give you a little more power if you can find a decent one, but you'll need to make changes to the exhaust.
