for reliability , economy , parts and general ease to run.
speed and power dont really matter.

a good N/A should be bullit proof but then i've had no problems with 200tdi's either.... both on mine or my dads. If you're thinking hot places then the N/A would probably fair better. Turbo's dont like heat and dust
 
my thoughts exactly , cheaper to buy and rebuild one as well which is the only way i can afford a decent engine.
 
N/A motors should be fairly straight forward.. having said that....I dont know my arse from my elbow when it comes to them :D

should be easier to find than a 200tdi though
 
good dose of mr sheen and a warm blanket would soon sort it out , good bush mechanics that.
 
but wouldnt a n/a give better fuel economy and be a bit tougher?
even if it is slower and gutless and crap.
 
If you're heading to these southern climes, plenty of both 2.5s and tdis about - the bush mechanics can fix em both equally well/badly. Never heard of a tdi overheating in the desert (unless it had a dodgy radiator of course).
 
so i wouldnt say they didnt mix with dust and ****e then if they are good enough for that. think when the td was designed it was for all conditions regardless what abuse you might give them.
 
You could always get a 200tdi and use it without the turbo - just to put more thoughts into your head. :D
 
My Defender had a TD in, now it has a 200tdi outa a Disco.

I would just like to say, the 200tdi is a mordern reliable engine, that starts at a touch of the key and returns about 32mpg (with the disco transfer and gear box).

The TD on the other hand, wasnt so nice. Struggled to start in the winter, had mulit coloured exhaust, and mine (130K on the clock) was doing about 22mpg, and this is the turbo model.:eek:

If u cant afford a 200tdi, take your time and pick a good N/A Diesel, you dont want to be stuck with a buggered one. :rolleyes:

yet my TD starts on the button, rain, snow, ice and shine, accellerates nicely, pulls well in all the gears, sits at 65-70 with ease and gets me the same mpg as my TD5. Ok it's no rocket ship, but if you don't thrash it and service it when you should, it'll go on and on (150k already). (touch wood).

I prefer it off-road to the TD5, I service it myself (not the TD5) I can tell just by looking at it how it works, what does what, what's wrong etc. Nowt wrong with them if you look after em.
