Hi
Posted in defender section last week and got some very useful feed back however it was noted that for my budget i could get a very good series 3/90 with a 2.5 na or a slightly tired 200tdi or a conversion.
Based on a good healthy 2.5 n/a engine, what kind of speeds will i be looking at for comfortable driving? any chance of me safely joining a motorway?
Secondly how would the performance be affected when towing a 1 ton caravan?
Im used to driving an 84 sherpa as my daily, its very low geared and doesn't like being pushed above 55mph (its auto) however no matter how loaded up it is, performance isnt affected one bit, will this be the same with a 2.5na?
Many thanks
James

The 84 Sherpa probably has the same engine in it as the 2.5NA. So similar speeds, gearing will be a bit different, I had a good one in my 90 for long enough, a good reliable tough engine, a bit slow but hey, it was ideal for my needs then. If I had a LR for local journeys, the odd trip further afield where time wasn't a major issue or on a farm and it was used for going about my land, up and down between the farms, into the local village etc I would have the 2.5NA happily - now spening about 90% of my time on the motorway I needed something with a bit more oomph so went 300tdi.

On the flat, it'll do 70, but the moment you hit even a slight incline, you'll be struggling to maintain 50, and you can forget any type of reasonable road performance towing a 1 tonne caravan, you're going to have a lot of unhappy people behind you :) If I pull an empty trailer, I feel the performance hit.

I like my 2.5NA, and it's always been good to me, but you will want to drive one before you decide to get one!
