Ok, I need a new starter motor on my Range 2.5 (bmw diesel engine) as the old one just spins a lot when cranking...

How much can I find one for? or has anybody got one spare?

Is it an easy job to fit? or how much would a garage charge me to fit it?

thanks

hi i brought a spare for mine off ebay for £15 but i have seen them on there for upto £60 fitting is very easy and you should be able to do it yourself in 20 mins 3 bolts on starter motor to gearbox couple of terminals on the starter itself and the main battery lead (for saftey)

yeah i'm looking now.. cheapest is about £65 inc postage..

and is it just a matter of getting under the car, 3 bolts and change wires over? obviously undo negative lead before i start...?

Not sure what way you guys went at it but I found the top bolt a bit of a bitch to get back in. Maybe my replacement starter was a small bit fatter than the one I took off but I'm still not happy with the tension I got on it.

Is that the Spud i know from RR.net. How's the kicker going or did you get the extreme in the end?

Right guys,

You have to be careful with the diesel starter motors.

Only two bolts holds it to the bell housing. There's two types that fit the BMW diesels, one is the geniune range rover & thye other is the vauxhall omega. Make sure you get the range rover as there IS a difference to the brushes & power rating.
The one's on ebay are sold for range rover but in fact, are for the vauxhall. You'll find they wont last as long.

Second thing is that these diesel starters are in demand as they fail more often than normal, so buying secondhand might not be the best idea.

You can get a recon for approx £120.
