hi, i have owned my p38 since november and so far so good! last couple of days since ploughing through about 10 inches of water i have a bad noise which sounds like a chain slipping on a spocket on a motorbike thats about the only thing i have heard which sounds the same! it only happens when i take off in 1st and sometimes 2nd but does not do it if i take off gently??
you can feel it through the car mainly handbrake/gearlever area any ideas?? thanks in advance for any advice.:scratching_chin:

Water got into the transfer box? Could try draining it and refilling the fluid. That's the only place in the while drivetrain that involves a chain, I believe...

every time the noise happens feels like it looses drive so when you pull away quite hard it slips and seems to loose drive on every click/clonk/chain slip? hope that makes sense! what keeps the chain under tension in the transfer box? is it hydrolic tensioner or is it just the right length?? when your moving it drives faultless no noise etc changes gear smooth and easy?

auto or manual g/box??
if manual i would say clutch is on its way out or forks on the cover plate are bent/worn thro by thrust bearing

hi its a manual gearbox clutch is good does not slip. just been reading on another landrover forum that range rover transfer boxes have a chain drive and over time the chain starts to stretch and causes it to slip on the sprockets causing the noise i am hearing. anybody ever heard of this or even better replaced a chain??
