ANY IDEARS PLEASE

Try disconnecting the flexible pipe from the inlet manifold (the one from the air filter) if the smoke goes away, then the filter or pipe is blocked. Changing the fuel filter might be a good idea.
These engines smoke badly if the timing for the fuel injection pump is wrong. The timing usually goes wrong gradually due to wear in the timing gear, particularly the drive mechanism between the camshaft and the fuel pump - however I have been told that there is securing bolt for this mechanism, accessed by removing the oil filter housing from the block, which can come loose and cause problems. Another possibility is that the small shaft between the drive mechanism and the fuel injection pump has become twisted (which will retard the timing): This shaft is designed to shear if the injection pump seizes, but sometimes the pump momentarily almost seizes up and nearly breaks the shaft. To begin with I would check that the three bolts securing the injection pump to the block have not worked loose. Another possibility is that one of the injectors is stuck open - but that usually makes a terrible racket. If the problem is not due to timing problems then I would get the injectors out and get a diesel specialist to test them. If that was not the problem take the injection pump off and give that to the specialist for testing. If none of that solves the problem then it could be a broken piston ring or a blown head gasket perhaps (did it overheat when you were off roading)

Don't shout it isn't that bad. Try removing the dipstick while the ening is running and place your hand over the dipstick tube. if it's spitting oil out it's a good sign that the piston rings are worn. or the oilfeed pickup filter in the sump is blocked. (sump off to check).

If the engine is knackered there are plenty of 2.5 N/A's and TD's around and going for pocket money as everyone is fitting tdi's. however in a series a TDI isn't a sinple swap while a 2.5 is. and they are perfectly adequate for normal everyday use in a series landy.
