air or battery gun works for me ,long bar and socket wedge on chassis underside of rh side top lh side and flicking on the starter,be careful though

Is there another way of locking the engine? I've got quite abit of the engine off and very little oil in it so dont fancy trying to use the starter motor. No air or battery gun either

Got it off, timing cover is off as well, nowt broken in there thankfully.

I've no idea how i check if the timing is out though  I presume i should just leave it along untill i've rebuild everything, then follow guide in workshop manual to redo it?

Had a look at the pistons, obvious valve marks on then, one has left a very slight indentation, is this anything to worry about or just leave as it is?

its not as straight forward as most engines its is set with piston at exhaust peak no 1 valve which is 108 degrees btdc and is marked on flywheel ,you will need a dti to set cam accurately ,id concentrate on cam followers ,was it smokey before when it ran ?

may well be worth resetting cam timing then ,you put a dti on the first cam lobe or follower since you have head off or you can wait till you refit head , i can run through it when your ready

You will also need a clamp or stand for it. I would advise the use of a magnetic stand with a couple of arms attached.

you can also cable tie pen to the rocker and have a lil bit of card, so when the rocker goes up and down the pen draws a line.

All parts are now ordered, gone for new pushrods along with new valves, might as well do the job right. Got all new gasket and replacing anything thats broke. Bought all the bits i need to get it ready for the mot as well. Just need some cable now to redo some wiring!
