My plan at the moment weather permitting will be to pull the cluster on Tuesday, I've got a good longish run tomorrow to get the gearbox oil changed so good chance to keep heaters on, and see what happens. Looked at videos of removing the cluster, it doesn't seem to bad to do.

There is a couple of hidden bolts at either end which if you know are there are ok to find, there is a youtube vid showing how to remove the end caps i think it is and i struggled getting the end air vents out as you have to bend over the tabs inside the vent and then just pull them out but mine were stuck fast until i gave the tabs an 'angry bend' and then they just pulled straight out.
good luck

well it took a funny turn today, literally took the car for gearbox service this morning, problems remained the same, picked it up, indicator warning lights worked, then stopped after 10 seconds, after that they would randomly stop & start turn by turn ending in them not working at all, so i'm wondering rather than the cluster if it's another unit dragging the i or k bus down, especially after finding the rear 1/4 where the sat nav is full of water again, nothing is powered up but could still be water affecting the bus. looks like a busy day tomorrow!

Do you have the westfalia towbar as mine leaked like a sieve until i sealed it up along the top edge where the brackets mount (Although it was me that fitted it so i can only blame me)
You are weeing in the wind a little without diagnostics as we have said so all you can do is check and replace I guess.

i have got a tow bar but not sure of the make, it has a square armature with a removable ball, anyway checked boot floor and i only have a couple of very small runs of water that don't even make it to the bottom of the wheel well, i think i may have just made progress however on a whim i decided to go out and pull the wiring plugs on the voice control module and sat nav, neither of these have been powered up since my original battery drain a few weeks ago. on the nav unit the wiring plugs were not wet but there was a bit of water around on the external case, which looks like it's been running down the case anyway i've now got the nav unit in the house to dry out, and the ibus seems to be working at the mo will see what happens in the morning. best guess water got in the nav unit and shorted the bus

My leak led to a lake under the EAS compressor so you are ok there at least.
oh well, keep searching, you will get there, i've said it time and again, the pleasure from owning these vehicles is the relief when you finally solve the riddle of what's wrong with them, until next time ....

If the Instrument Cluster (IKE) is playing silly buggers, it will affect the Databuses as they all use the IKE as a 'Gateway'....

The LCM is a 'Master' unit on the CAN and the IKE is a 'Slave'.....if it is playing around, you will get spurious CAN faults....

The CAN ties, the engine, gearbox, EAS, ABS and small peripherals like the headlamp levelling unit together....

A little light reading is attached!

Cheers Saint I've been researching the different busses today, with this problem I've had no errors plus a code on the ride height not being received by abs, so could be all linked after all, I'll see what it does tomorrow morning and read/clear any codes again

Well today everything has worked faultlessly all the warning lights etc working as they should, and the error codes on the abs system and suspension has not returned, so I have now ordered a new tailgate seal and the water shedder just in case, the I can concentrate on getting everything dry before reconnection, did have a strange suspension issue earlier, drove the car parked it up and heard the dreaded air leaking noise from driver side front and it sunk to the bump stop!, air bag I thought, so was prepairing myself for a big bill, but after starting the old girl back up she went to normal height and been fine since.

If you haven't replaced the air springs they can leak at different heights and not others depending on the fold and the EAS compressor and reservoir will mask leaks for a while but could just be a random gremlin loose in the system as you know already which is quite likely

Put it this way, you ain't going to be bored any time soon , even driving the buggers gets the heart rate going, not because they are exciting but because you are wondering if you are going to make it to wherever you are going

well the unthinkable happened this morning, popped out and got to my destination and it's there again psssss from the drivers wheel arch, any way i get home and decide to take a look so i put the car into off road mode and 'whoosh' down goes the drivers front, yep you guessed it air strut gone so ordered one this morning so looks like my next job is lined up!

Island 4x4 were always good, i bought dunlop and wish i hadn't as i think they are knocking which is a known fault as pretty much everything else is new at the front of mine, and the back for that matter...
