Thanks again, guys, for replies.
In answer to 'Blackburn's' post above - the two wee pics won't enlarge for me, try as I might, so I can't read them, unfortunately.
However, you have brought up a point which I hadn't considered, which is adjusting the 'new' diaphragm to the same setting as the old one that came out, via the locknut. I didn't check this at the time so will endeavour to do so soon. I did use the original pin, though.

In answer to 'Turboman' - don't worry - I wasn't offended by your 'well meaning' comment, just decided to defend myself anyway !
Two great sharp pics of pump here - the two adjusting screws in the throttle arm are roughly about central in their slots, (with the yellow paint apparently undisturbed) - about the same as mine, so mine can't be that far out. Your throttle arm stop screw is right back, where mine is not, and your tick over screw on the right of the pic is screwed a good bit further in than mine, (in fact yours looks like it's about full in), but this is the only difference I can see.

Incidentally, have to noticed any 'dead travel' on your throttle arm before the revs rise, as I mentioned previously ?

It's still the function and setting of the wee arm UNDER the throttle arm that I need to get info on...............

Yes there is some movement off the stop before the revs rise. Still not found spare pump, which is much easier to look at closely than on a vehicle, I think the bottom linkage could be to deliver extra fuel at higher throttle settings.

In reply to "Turboman" - I still think the lever under the main throttle arm is something to do with slowing down the throttle shut-off because it only comes into play just before throttle closure and it is free from the action of it's tension spring at higher throttle positions, but you might still be right. Can anyone else explain what this arm does ?

Thanks, "Trax" for the picture blow-ups - now I can see what's going on under the top cover - the way the small throttle tick over arm at the front end of the pump and the main throttle arm is interconnected/related inside, but it still doesn't enlighten me as to what the small arm referred to above does.

I can't really see in the small picture so I've taken my own

If it's the bit I've circled the it's a wire seal and doesn't connect to anything, have you done any work on it since it last started and if so what have you done?

Thank you soooo much for the help and picture...! That is the bit i was enquiring about but looking at your picture i don't have the big thick strap which looks like an earth wire behind it....? I had a garage put a new clutch and slave cylinder in a couple of weeks ago, and to be honest it's came out of the garage worse than it went in...! They told me the starter motor was going but i had no issues with it previously. Also they hadn't put the bonnet back on and i'm noticing bits and pieces not attached, I also knew of a small split in the exhaust which has come out of the Garage as a major split along the front end....? Any way worried about taking it back in to look at this and would rather do as i have always done and do it myself after research and advice from those who know about defenders...!

I took an jump lead from the negative battery terminal and earthed it on the engine, The engine turns over "Just" so i'm thinking its a bad earth somewhere? or would the starter cause this? Problem is without sounding too daft...! i can't find the starter motor, i looked where Haynes manual said and can't see it, so i searched online to see what it looks like but can't see anything similar to whats online...! Baffled and in need of severe help...! I'm a life long defender fan who only got my first one a year ago...learning fast how to do every thing on it, but refuse point blank to give up on it even though family think i'm mad...! Any help and these great pictures ou have taken will be very much appreciated.

Hey guys, i just took apart the pump, in the car, everything is great except i dont know where the last spring goes... its on the outside of Lever A on the pictures on page two.

Where does it go??

Thanks!

Pablo

Have you got diesel ****ing out of that? Even so it should still start, that's just to control fuelling under boost.
