My Defender failed the MOT on a diesel leak that was coming from the throttle shaft on top of the pump. I looked at getting it fixed and was going to cost a bomb so had a go at it myself.... pump still in vehicle!
It was a piece of p*ss to do. I have read so much on the web about how this needs a rebuild and it is rubbish. I did it in one evening to strip top and one evening to put back. Total time about 4 hours. I recon I could do it now in about 2.
I bought an overhaul kit from Diesel Bob on the web but to be honest I used about a 1/3 of it. At £40 it was not really worth it... RS components sell all the o rings... you just have to measure them. Hardest part was reconnecting all the springs but if you climb in the vehicle engine bay... there is enough room you can get close enough to do it. Tip.... put a sheet on the drive to catch the springs when they go ping... and they will go ping.

PM me if you need any guidance... don’t be scared!!!!! They are giant meccano sets!;)

Engine bay is dry and now no gearbox leaks. Wife loves the look of the drive. Caretaker at work smiles at me now I am not an oil/diesel dripper. Dont stand for a leak on a Defender... those that say they all leake cant be bothjered to change seals. Did front and rear output shafts seals on Monday... 2 hours for both. Hardest bit was getting the old seals out!

Hi. I ‘m new to LandyZone. Your thread come up an google and it was exactly my problem! Mines a 1986 2.5 NA Diesel with the came Lucas CAV pump. Inspired, I had a go and sure enough it was the throttle shaft o ring. All done, back together, but won’t start, bled it, but the only thing that is not right, the throttle does not return fully. Could I have fluffed something up internally? I don’t want the top off again but I’m guessing I’m going to have to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
