It could be possible the valvebody seals/solenoids are leaking and it is energising both the forward and reverse clutches at the same time cauing it to stall..

valvebody off and a test would show..

however it would prolly benefit from a rebuild.

BTW, what kind of untoward noises are we talking about? Rather hard to tell.
A few months ago he started rattling at the front end, ended up having water pump, new belt tensioner and that funny rubber-joined pulley replaced. The pulley was a s/h part. Not all the rattles went away, and whilst topping up the gearbox i could hear a rattle, but I was so close to the bottom of the engine and the exhausts which carry noise anyway, there as no way to tell where the rattle came from.
 
OK... so he's SORN'd until I can afford to fix him. That's looking like April, when I'm praying for a tax rebate. Apart from charging his battery and starting him occasionally, anything you'd recommend I do while he's not being driven? He's parked in Park with the hand brake off.

just be sure not to get it wet, don't feed it after midnight either!!! ;)

You can get a digital mechanics stethoscope for under £20. Very good for tracking down noises. Or a screwdriver on the ear is a low tech version but watch for your hair fouling in moving parts.
 
My P38 made a terrible racket because:
1.The tin heat-shields on the exhausts rattle like bu@@ery.
2. An exhaust manifold gasket had a gap/hole in it and so it was letting by.
Noises most noticeable when parked up next to a wall or stopped alongside the concrete central reserve/barriers on a motorway.
Manifold off, new gaskets, sorted.

I have been the subject of identity theft on 2 occasions, one via my company and one personal. Having bailiffs turn up at my accountants demanding £20K in rent on a suit of offices in Birmingham was not funny, there were a lot of other bills that were not mine turning up too. Living in France was my get out, I could prove that I was never in the UK when the rental contract was signed. since then I have never put much in the way of personal information on the internet.
