If you topped it up and it worked ,see if it needs topped again ,if it does and it works ,you must have a leak on the cooler pipe, take a look at where you drive for fluid on the ground ;)....RR

Nanocom, maybe there is a Landyzone member nearby who could oblige in return for tea and biscuits?
Thanks, I mean, what are we looking at, since as I understand it the gearbox doesn't provide diagnostic info? So I guess you are thinking about some other system being wrong? Or does the gearbox indeed tell us where it is hurting? :)

There's some basic information available from the auto ECU. I've got a manual so never really looked.

There is a lot of info from the auto box ECU including engine power. The main thing that worries me is that you say it kind of slams going into gear and wants to stall the engine like there is no slip in the torque converter. Other than that there would be other possibilities than the gearbox/torque converter.

Once he's stalled, if I re-start the engine, as soon as I try to put him in High range Drive everything slams and the engine stalls. I can just about get away with putting him in Low range 4 if I give him a bit of throttle to get past his trying to judder to a halt. This time around he was less inclined to drive in Low range either.

I've just SORN'd him with DVLA, this is going to take a while to save up for and sort :(

It really does sound like the torque converter has broken up internally. Maybe only a torque converter is needed, no way of knowing without a strip down.

I'm thinking / hoping the same thing, as the gearbox seems to work for a while until something else steps in. When you say strip down, do you mean a gearbox stripdown, or just remove gearbox and easy-replace the torque converter?

Looking at the drawings, it's possible that it's actually an electronic fault causing the torque converter lock up clutch to permanently engaged. It's an outside chance, never heard of it happening, but it is possible. I would account for the slamming into gear but not the lack of power.
I really think it needs to go on diagnostics, have a look at the LZIR map and see if there is anyone near you that could come and take a look. It could just be a problem with the ECU.

Whoo...well thank you! Though I'm remembering his low-oil symptoms from before the Big Bonk, and thinking I'm the Girl Who (May Have) Killed A Range Rover Gearbox By Neglect... so wouldn't be surprised if the torque converter is broken. But if that can be replaced without the rest of the gearbox I can afford a new part.
Engine has plenty of power (for a P38 diesel), just not reaching past the transmission!
Where do I find the LZIR map?

Aww thanks, but I should have known / did know the poor boy was low on oil and not happy, but what with my natural laziness and my Parkinson's, I was waiting until I could afford the fluid and filter change I'd already semi-arranged, when the Big Bonk happened. Damn Land Rover for removing the dipstick on later models!

Any untoward noises from around the bellhousing area?

It could be possible the valvebody seals/solenoids are leaking and it is energising both the forward and reverse clutches at the same time cauing it to stall..

valvebody off and a test would show..

however it would prolly benefit from a rebuild.

OK... sounding interesting. Sounds like a case for diagnostics to confirm? Probably not a job for me to fix though. Thanks for the interesting theory!
