Bought a 1998 300tdi auto a week, had a test drive at the time and all was OK. It has recently had a full service, including transmission oil and filter.

Things I've since noticed while driving it are:

The rev counter wasn't consistent (1st auto in 20 years), sometimes it will drop to idle when I lift off the throttle, other times it will drop slower. I have checked the connections on the back of the alternator and all seem tight and secure, but not checked alternator output, although low charge light isn't coming on.

I'm getting the transmission temp light come on once the vehicle is up to temp and after about 3-5 miles (depending on traffic), it does go off on the motorway, but comes back on in slower traffic. Trans oil is bright red and at correct level, no burnt oil smells, but the transmission tunnel does get hot around the selector. Not yet checked the trans oil cooler to see if it is blocked or the sensor or checked the temp. I can't say for sure if it is going through all the gears or shifting at the corrct RPM/speed due to the inconsistent rev counter.

I'm getting the "check engine" light come up intermittently, either while I'm cruising or lifting off the throttle and then goes out when press it again.

Coupled with the "check engine" light, I'm also getting what I would describe as a misfire, so far, it has only been occasional and only when on the throttle, I don't have to lift for it to clear. Sometimes the "check engine" light comes on with it, sometimes it doesn't. Speed isn't a factor, as it can do it in traffic or on the motorway.

I do have an older Snap-on MT2500 diagnostic scanner, which I'm hoping will at least read something relating to the engine (it reads my 2001 Td4 Freelander commercial).

Other issues I knew it had when I bought it and can live with for now, are:
AC doesn't appear to be working - hopefully just a regas.
Cruise control doesn't appear to be working - light on switch not coming on, so hopefully just a fuse.
Both rear windows don't open - will require further investigation.
OSR door doesn't fully unlock, but locks OK - suspect worn mechanism/solenoid
NSR door doesn't unlock at all on CC locks OK - suspect faulty solenoid.
Traditional sealing of both sun roofs - not bothered.

Any pointers would be much appreciated, thanks.

I had a bit of grief with my 300 auto so ive just converted it to a manual, if you find out you need any sensors ect
give me a shout also the doors are probably the door springs on the lock mech ive just a full set rear ones are
easy front ones are more time consuming. ;)

Ok
1. Iffy connection at the rear of the alternator maybe, that’s assuming the engine revs aren’t dropping also.
2. Iffy ATF temp sensor that’s in-line with the cooler pipe, easy to replace and could be found in the engine bay.
3. Check engine light/misfire, I haven’t a clue, I don’t do diesel.
4. AC, re-gas maybe... but where has the stuff gone, get a specialist to check why.
5. Cruise, it needs 12v to work, but if the rear wash wipe and door mirrors work it’s not the fuse.
6. Iffy window ECU, known faults with dry joints on the PCB.
7. Re-adjustment of the lock actuator by moving the actuator mounting plate, after slightly undoing the four screws.
8. As above.
9. Sunroof/s leaking, just replace either or both seals.
NEXT :)

Chers Kevstar, I'll bare you in mind if I need sensors.

Thanks Discool:
1, Will have to double check if the engine is dropping to idle when I lift off the throttle (wonder if my Scanner will read the RPM).
2, That is another thing to check, will have to look to see if there are any resistance readings for it, or just swap it out anyway, regardless of condition of the oil cooler.
3, Behaved itself in this respect today, about 5 miles of motorway, 1 mile of national speed limit dual carriageway, then about 3 miles around town and back home, not a flutter.
4, As and when job. I won't use a regas kit, I'd take it to a garage, so they can service the AC properly.
5, Electric windows operate OK, can't remember if I actually checked the rear was/wipe on the test drive or since I've had it, but will check.
6, Will check that all out.
7%8, Got experience with CL solenoids and adjustment, but for now, will be an as and when job.
9, Not too worried about the sunroofs ... if I end up selling my Freelander, then I'll move my auxiliary battery bank and solar panel over.
