Hi guys,
I am being tempte by a 1998 3 door Disco 1 300TDI. It has 130,000 Miles, service history and is described as in very good condition. It's has a manual gearbox. The owner invited me to tap the sills and boot with a hammer to see that they are solid. It was waxoyled last year, and he said that it had 1 repair done to the chassis. He wants £1,700 for it.

To be honest with you, I was after a Disco 2, but being tempted as this is a lot cheaper, still looks good, and I only have a 5 mile jouney to work, so not too worried about comfort.

I have searched the forum and have an idea what to look out for, however I am wonderinig if being a 3 door car, the rear arch rust is more difficult to detect and fix, as obviously you cannot open the door!! Any other drawbacks to a 3 door truck that are not obvious?

Cheers

Dave

Stick your hands under the rear arches and have a gentle tap around under there, he should not refuse if he was happy for you to tap the sills, unless he has something to hide.

The tend to rot most at top of the arch, I looked at a clean one last year but the N/S arch was rotten I poked my fingers right through it. Check the boot floor as well, unscrew the trim that holds the carpet down and lift it to have a good look. They rot on the inner front wings as well so have a good poke around under the bonnet.

Sounds a nice motor hope its all ok.

Sounds good, but do the above recommendation. Best to look under the carpets if pos (just unscrew the plastic edge strips) and have a nosey (torch light) and feel for damp. Much of the rot in disco's comes from inside due to leaks and the soundproofing holding water. Check front footwells and boot floor as best you can..

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm in Stirling and yes, a friend of mine who has one is coming with me. But his is a 5 door...
