Sounds just like the wife!

Hopefully I'll be able to look at both today. Wasn't sure about younger one to start with , to be honest wasn't sure about either:confused:. However if you think about £1k is a lot of money that I could spend 'personalising' the '94 one:D.

Will report back later on today on how things go. Although ...have seen one in Bradford (200 miles from me) that looks really clean & well looked after .

Dealer did say he'd just recently opened & when I asked about Hpi check, he said that he does these. It seems to be a bloody mine field out there. Looked at a 300 tdi testerday that I left 'cause I wasn't sure about and have seen lots about so don't want to buy the fist on I look at. I've found another that's a '94 M reg 200tdi with only 86k warranted miles with 12 month mot at £1450. What's the major difference between 2/300 tdi's? Is it worth spending more to get a 300tdi?

Thanks for the information:)

Paul
Very little difference between a 200 and 300Tdi. They are essentially the same engine. 300Tdi is claimed more refined, but in truth I can hardly tell any difference.

Some late 300's (I think maybe autos??) had an ECU whereas all other Tdi's used a manual injector pump. The only time this'll be an issue is if you want to tune it/tweak it.

There are other differences between the 200 and 300 Series Disco's.

-Gearboxes. 300 has the R380 and 200 the LT-77. They are essentially the same gearbox though. Many claims the R380 is better, but I've certainly driven a share of worse ones too.

-Axles. 200's are like an old Range Rover underneath and use the 10 spline axles and diffs. 300's I think swapped to the 24 spline shafts and diffs. In reality there is very little difference in outright strength, although I think there are more options to beef up the 24 spline ones if you plan an extreme off roader running 35" mud tyres.

-Subtle exterior trim. 300 has different grill, front lights, front indicators, door handles and bigger mirrors. Also rear lights in the rear bumper. None are really any different or superior to a 200 which uses RRC/Marina/TR7 door handles and RRC door mirrors.

-Interior. 300 Series has a very different interior, different dash, seats, trim the lot. Personally I think its a MASSIVE backwards step from the rather funky and open original Discovery.

That's it mostly. Personally I think a 200 Series stands a fair chance of being in equal condition and is just as capable with a nicer interior. :)

Bloody ell lot's of finking going on there :D

Thanks again for the info. Only got to see the '97 on '99 one today. The guy told me it was 'really good, great body work but I've not got round to valeting it'. Fcuk me it was stinkin'. Told me he'd been thinking about keeping it & using it to take his dogs out; I asked if they'd been fcuking sleeping in it:eek:. Needs 4 tyres, new back box, the ns wing mirror fell of when I walked passed it & even though it's not got sunroofs the headlining sagged like, well have a guess but not pleasant. He wanted £2495 & asked if I wanted to make an offer; not at that money & I wont offer near it either. So I told him £1500 should have seen his face:D So his return was £2k and take it away. Guess what? I'm back home with cash in pocket but no Disco.

Hope the '94 model is better as my wife is getting more disillusioned with each one I look at. Onwards & upwards eh.

Sounds like a complete dog
That's the thing with landies, you can find a cracking 25-30yr old model and some 10-12yr old models that have been abused to death.

Well today's viewing was even worse:doh: Didn't even speak to the dealer as I would have decked him. I think there should be a law passed about 'bull****ters'. Why say it's got great bodywork then, when you see it the rear valance panel is flapping in the wind? Welding on the inner rear door sills could have been done by 18 month old grandson:p. And that's with a new 12 month MOT.

So, I propose that if you bull**** about the condition you should pay the fuel costs incurred?

Tomorrow I'm going to bite the bullet & go over the original budget & buy one that's had lots of work already done & is, I'm assured really, really good. 500 mile return road trip tomorrow.

Watch this space.

Paul

No such luck:mad:. So ****ed off with people who tell you a lot of bollocks. 10 hours driving 540 miles.

'New' tyres to me look like they've done 20k already. They were all the same make but funnily enough only 1 had raised white lettering:confused:

Sunroof was sealed by a blind man with a shovel.

Rear 1/4 valance was holed & flapping in the wind.

The inner rear doors that 'hadn't been welded' were painted over and the holes filled with what can only be described as plastecene.

No 2nd/3rd gear crunch; just felt as if it had been thumped in by a JCB.

Worst was I went to check low range & diff lock; now I could be wrong but I'm almost positive that you move the small lever to the left to engage the diff lock? Tried this & it wouldn't budge; he nearly had a stroke & told me that he'd sold over 40 Discoveries & none had the diff lock fitted:doh:. It wasn't keen in going between hi/lo either.

I don't think I'm being overly fussy but really good condition to me doesn't include holes, part worn 'new' tyres, etc, etc.

I'm only looking for an honest guy (gal) to sell me a straight Disco ffs.

A lot of Disco's (and other 4x4's) spend their life on tarmac and as a result the diff lock and low range never get used and get stuck.

Mine had spent 12 years with the last owner and I don't think they ever touched the small lever.
As a result with several big thumps I got low range working but diff lock needed some garage magic.

Have you tried the local clubs to you most of them have a for sale / wanted board and or forum.
Also let any local Land Rover specialists know you are on the lookout. They may know of vehicles that are about to be put up for sale.

You`ve had some bad luck in your search, but not as bad as actually buying a bad un! Keep your hopes up as there are good `uns out there. I don`t think your expectations are unreasonable, but do agree with you about arsehole car dealers. There are some honest ones out there.. but not too many.

Hi there Iwantone,

dont lose faith.... it took me about 3 months to find my disco.
because i am in Portugal it was even harder as i had to come back to the UK to get it , and check it out of course.

i ended up with a H reg Disco 200tdi with 146,000 miles lots of modifications all done by a loving Landy enthusiast.....all at the great price of £750 pounds.

keep the faith you will find a good one eventually
