How does this work?: 1997 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 TD5 E 5 SEAT 5DR 1999 MODEL

Spoke to dealer about this Discovery, he said it's possibly been built but not registered until '99. It's advertised as a Td5; but they never built Td5's in 97 did they? When I asked he said 'that's a good question I'll need to look under the bonnet:doh: It's also a 5 seat model, didn't know they came with only 5 seats. Anyway I'm maybe going to look at it tomorrow as it's only half an hour away so the question is how does a noob tell if it's a 300tdi or Td5?

Cheers guys,

Paul

its a 300tdi as the lights are small and low down,if you look at a td5 you will see the rear lights are higher and larger and as just said a td5 has 5 cyd, hope this helps.

Beat me to it..........

It's defo not a td5, as said the lights are wrong and the wheels and door handles are different on a td5.

Have a look on ebay at some 300tdi and td5's and you'll see it's not what it says it is.

It might be an honest mistake by the dealer but he can't be a v good one if he doesn't know what he's selling  if you do go look at it check the vin plates and get an hpi check done before you think about buying it.

Dealer did say he'd just recently opened & when I asked about Hpi check, he said that he does these. It seems to be a bloody mine field out there. Looked at a 300 tdi testerday that I left 'cause I wasn't sure about and have seen lots about so don't want to buy the fist on I look at. I've found another that's a '94 M reg 200tdi with only 86k warranted miles with 12 month mot at £1450. What's the major difference between 2/300 tdi's? Is it worth spending more to get a 300tdi?

Thanks for the information:)

Paul

There were no D2's in the showrooms in September 1997 when I got my disco, just a few remaining 97MY and lot of 98MY D1's.
1998 saw the launch of the D2 and in the showrooms still a few 98MY D1's but lots and lots of D2's
Difficult to see how any D2 's could have be registered in 1997.

The link shows a 1998MY disco.:)

The 300 is a little more refined than the 200 which is a plus from the comfort point of view but a minus as it means there's more to go wrong. I drive a '92 200 and it is comfortable to drive and more than capable at any off roading I want to do. For a while I was driving over 1000 miles a week and it was faultless.

If the 200 you mentioned has a genuine 86k miles go have a look at it, check for rust EVERYWHERE but especially sills, footwells, inner arches front and rear and the boot floor (flip the back seats up, lift the carpet all the way and have a good look at it).

If it's not rusty and the engine and g'box are sound then I would say offer £1200 and the money you saved not buying a 300 can be spent on getting it waxoiled, polybushed and anything else you want to do.

Patience is a virtue especially when looking for a good landie,

Good luck with your search. :)

Did 300 TDi's not came out in 1993 on an L plate, never heard of a 94 200tdi

I think there was a crossover with the 200/300's I've seen both of them on L reg and I'm sure I've seen a 200 on an M. I might be wrong though:confused:

It could be a mistake by the advertiser there's a couple on the bay advertised as 200's that obviously aren't.

Nah you're correct, a few definitely got registered in the same time period, I've got a 94' 300TDi, a bloke not far from me has got a 94' 200TDi.

So how does a noob differentiate between a 94 200tdi & 300tdi? Sorry if there's an obvious answer.

Paul

easiest way from the outside is look at the rear bumper, if it's got indicators in the bumper it's a 300. In the engine bay a 200 has a round air filter and a 300's is square.

The first 300 series D1's arrived with the 1995MY disco in March 1994, Tdi, V8 and the MPi any 200 series still for sale then would have been the 1994MY.

To ID the difference is by the radio, on the 300 it's high in the dash above the heater controls.

Vehicle reg numbers are not aways an indication of the model year of a car.
