Anybody know how easy it is to fit a thermostat to a 1997 Discovery 300TDI..How much Water do you need to Drain off..It seems that I just need to loosen the waterpipe and drain the water from the thermostat Housing..Which is on top of the Engine..Then undo the housing bolts and take out old thermostat..Is this right..

You won't loose too much water. It is as straight forward as you think just make sure you top up through the thermostat housing to avoid airlocks.

You pretty much got it,with engine cold just loosen off the housing bolts,take housing off,some water falls out,you put the new stat in place of the old,taking notice if it has a "this way up" label,put back together and like greg said,replace water through top of housing.Replace those plastic bungs with brass while you are at it,you can get them from B&Q or any place that sells domestic heating stuff.
New Thermostat Replaced..Got to be the Easiest Thermostat I have ever Done..One thing though. Can anybody tell me, what is that Plastic unscrewable cap on top of the thermostat housing for..Is it for Bleeding..Just like House radiators..As I have noticed it still takes quite a long time for the inside car heaters to work..I have to take the car for a couple of miles or so to get it to full heating..Of Which is great when there on..But could be a bit of a niusance when starting up on cold very icy mornings..

they can be replaced with brass bungs .to ensure system is full it must be filled with both bungs out and replaced when overflowing including expansion tank any excess will come out of cap harmlessly,level in expansion tank is no indicator of engine level

AS I mentioned above,and JM just said,the plastic buggers need to go as they are the points to fill your coolant properly. You can even go as far as to use a domestic radiator bleed valve on the top one (on the stat housing) to let air out once filled.
Whatever,bin the plastic and get some brass ones.Take one into a plumbing supply to match threads or pay a LR dealer to do that for you.

when I changed my thermostat because of poor heater system I was advised to bleed system, without removing bungs, by the method leaving off the cap of the expansion tank and the engine running for about 20 minutes. Also keep cab heater on.
This was from a retired Landrover garage foreman.
Did the same when i had to exchange my expansion tank and have never had any overheating problems. Did this over 2 years ago.
I will change the bungs at some point.
