hi i have a range rover p38 1996 dse which has been very probmatick . i was hoping that i have got everthing fixed then i new set of problems have started and they are

(1) i cant open the boot

when i try and open the boot the pass rear inside light comes on and nothing else happens. i have changed the button and the lock motor and no change. ave checked the voltage and thats low at 2volt.were could my problem be

(2)inside light probs

when i unlock. the pas side rear inside light comes on and nothing else.
when i turn on the inside lights the rear pass light come on and nothing else.
when i turn on one of the front map reading lights the rear pass inside light comes on and the map light is very dim.
when i turn on the drivers side rear inside light both rear inside lights comes on but very dim.
all blubs have been checked and they all work.
when i go to lock using the key fobthe rangy i cant do so untill the inside lights go off.
all this started at the same time as the boot prob

(3)drivers door saying its not latched

this started a week after the above problems , whats hapning is the door will lock and unlock normaly with the key or fob. but when driveing they are a fault message comming up saying door not latched and this then goes away then comes back again while you are driving.

(4)engine disabled

this some times happens when the range rover has been sitting for a while when beeing unlocked . i have to lock and then unlock the range rover with the key fob before the engine will start. this started at the same time as the drivers door

i have changed the under bonnet fuse box and this did not cure the problems . the box i used was a secound hand one . but this was before the door lock problem and i now have changed back to the old fuse box to see if the new box was more faulty than the frist one but all the probs are still there.

i would be very geatful for any help because my wife now want rid so that she can buy a l200 pickup :(

thats not good news mate, check the main power feeds on the becm first as these can some times come lose a burn the insulating blocks between the live and case on the becm. if all are ok i would think the problem would point towards a faulty becm as all functions are performed by the becm.

again with battery disconnected clean all bcem plugs/earth with a can of electrical contact/switch cleaner.could well be bcem but I have seen three with bad plugs now.

before disconnecting battery make sure you have eka code.

Also does it play up on damp days

hi thanks for your help i will check the conections on the bcem is soon that i get off shift currnetly working 5am to 10pm for the next week. i did a bit of reading and all the items witch is playing up is controlled by the bcem, and most places say try changing the fuse box before the bcem because it can also give the faults.

the frist 2 faults started in dry weather but the last 2 started after the snow. i have looked at the drivers door lock and it looked wet so i sprayed it and its made no diffrence so i will have to wait for a dry day (this being shetland i might have to wait awhile)then i will remove the lock and dry it right.

i bought the range rover last year for £3500 and prob spent £3000 on fixing bits (gearbox)so you all can see why am getting greef

if its earth fault you could try following the cables, i am sure there is one on the chassis near the battery. or try putting a jump lead on the battery and body/engine and see if it makes a difference. if it does just upgrade all the earth points!

ave cleaned the earth points under the bonnet and the earth points at the rear still to clean ones at the bcem still to try and find ones under the dash am dredding removing the dash

Hi Just got my first P38 with a few electircal problems....Google CALLROVA in Brighton......sorted mine out at less tahn half the dealers price.

yes i could try some place to fix my rangy but they are a prob with that and that is i stay in shetland and the only ones that can work with it is the mane deller and they are about is much use as a choclate fire gaurd. so everything i have to do is a learning curve. ave ordered a new door lock so lets hope this may start to slove some of the probs that i have.

fitted new door lock sloved the fallowing probs

i think its coming time to give up anyone still have any ideas

Sounds to me like a typical bad earth problem, don't know the P38 well enough to suggest where to look but maybe around the Becm under the seat as I have read about earth problems there before:confused:

Ive got a 2001 dhse and had a load of electrical problems cleaned the main earth for the fusebox and added a new earth from the battery to the earth under the fusebox in the engine bay

would a continuity test, with battery removed, on the connections to the boot mechanism prove which wire is goung to earth/split then trace that wire or replace it as far back as possible?

that sounds like a idea i have been tracing the boot wires but found nothing yet am moving on to checking the bcem contections and earth points but i was going to do that today but am needing the range rover next week and am no wanting to imboleise the range rover due to wifes uncle rolled his 110 so he is got my 110 at the mo.but any surjetion are gearty receved (sorry about the spelling:rolleyes:)

been down at the bcem and tryed cleaning the earth no change still having probs tryed checking conections still no joy . so ave removed the bcem for testing dose anyone know someone to test it

had a good day today ave found some green conections were the drivers door wiring loom connects to the right hand side wiring loom. so lets hope that when i get the connections clean everything will work

its usually the case with the rangey, all the fittings and connections seem to be very poor quality. it suprises me given the cost of a new vehicle!!!
