No straight oil, I think I'll throw in some diesel in the morning aswell then just to be safe!
Xyz is the one on side of gearbox yes?
Yes lo range works perfect and changes gear at the correct revs.

XYZ is on the side of the gearbox. do you get the correct lights in low range? do the lights by the gear lever light?
If the changes are correct in low range, I think that kind of rules out the XYZ switch. Engine ECU temeprature sensor has been reported as causing shift problems. Is the carpet dry in the drivers foot well?

Ok I took it on the motorway today and got it upto 70 in 4th and as soon as I came off motorway and it changed down to 3rd I got the "gearbox fault" message flash up and once again the "p,r,n,d" display wasn't visible on odometer...
So I maybe wrong here but I'm thinking what if something is telling the car that there is a problem with 4th gear so it is trying not to use 4th therefore increasing the rev range in the lower gears and only going into 4th when it has no other choice....
Or what if the gearbox has been changed or the ecu has been changed in the past and the part numbers don't match up?
Do they do a 3 speed box? As I only have 1,2,3,d on my gear selector no "4" option???

Are you confusing 4th gear with torque converter lock up? 2000 RPM in torque lock should give you around 56 MPH. Think a look at the XYZ switch maybe helpful for the other faults.

Going from 2-3 I have to rev upto 3750 and hold there for approx 5 seconds or go to 4k for it to change up and by then I'm doing 50mph.... Once in 3rd the revs drop to 2500-3000rpm
It maybe the lock up I can feel then but I thought these were 4 speed boxs?

Yes no difference... Looking on eBay and the xyz seems to come in different colour plugs how would I know which is right without getting under the car? There seems to be a choice of grey and black plug

Strange as it may seem D = 4th gear as well as automatic shift through the gears.

Before you start chopping stuff out it needs to go on diagnostics and look at live data not just recorded faults. Input & output speed sensors, XYZ switch outputs etc.

Ok someone is coming to view the car this evening I'm not going to let it go for buttons but if they make me a good enough offer I'd be silly not to sell and get a hassle free motor! If I keep it tho xyz sensor will be next and take it from there

all land rovers are never hassle free, just the nature of them.if you want a hassle free vehicle, let us know if you find one,of any make.do as has been suggested by data and get the fault codes read, then take it from there??

XYZ is not a sensor it is a switch. If it is dirty with poor contacts it will throw all sorts of problems. Cleaning it out may work wonders.

Hi All,
I've recently bought a 2000 P38 & over the last week I have had the intermitant problem where if i'm driving along & take my foot off the throttle the rev's drop to tick over level & when i put my foot back down again it will rev right up to around 35000 rev's before it will select the gear also sometimes when i pull up it won't select first until i rev it & the same if i try & select reverse. Do you think this could be solved by a gear box oil & filter change only i have been told the box is knackered & quoted around £1000 to fix it & after reading some of your comments on here wonder if there's a chance this could solve my problems???

Box works on oil pressure sounds like at lower RPM it is losing pressure. So the main drive clutch is dropping out. Either your oil is old and the filter is almost totally blocked or the oil pump is knackered. If your filter is that blocked and your oil pump is ok, leave it like that and it soon won't be. 35,000 RPM is pretty high for a P38, does it have a gas turbine in it? :D:D:D

Nitro engines rev about 32k per minute. Could be a big one of those?

Is this a manual or automatic? If it was manual I'd say the clutch is cooked.

Bugger. Answered while I was typing. Auto it is.

Change of oil and some of that Lucas fix Wammers goes on about would be cheaper than a new box. Got to be worth a punt.
