Up **** creek.
hey fellas where online can i buy a nice exhaust for my LPG converted 1996(N) 3.9 V8efi? I would like it to enhance the sound and performance of the Rover V8 but at the same time nothing too boistrious as its also my missus' everyday school/shopping runner. I'm on a budget (about £400 - ish) and the discos also got cats. any help?

Also the centerbox seems to have been replaced quite recently, could i just buy just a performance rear silencer and save myself a lot of money? cheers.

Hi. I fitted a replacement stainless steel 'cat back system' mid and back box from Janspeed. It was a perfect fit and was a very easy DIY job as you can unbolt the hangers and then remove the rubbers. It comes in two parts which are joined in the centre with a bolted flange much better then sliding the pipe into the other method.

As for the sound, loudish to start with but after 500 mls or so it's now a light V8 "rumble" from the tail pipe, and no sound coming through the pipe or silencer walls which says a lot for the thickness of the steel. As for the price the best I found was £290 delivered from europerformance.co.uk but the system came direct from Janspeed, still best to search the web.

The exhaust is only a performance exhaust when combined with other mods to the engine. ie induction, getting more fuel in to the engine, and extraction, getting the burnt gasses out. That will be big valves and a camshaft change then.
But U will still notice some difference when fitted.

Yes u can buy a tail section on it's own

Well done, don't know about the K&N though.

Come back and let us know how u get on with fitting and what u think of your new setup.

it arrived wed as promised, i bought a new cat Y pipe aswel as the cat on the off side was dead when i bought the car and has always rattled, i only hope it was a backfire from the car running out of petrol and nothing more serious that caused the cat to fail:eek: the Y section took a little time to remove and i decided to unclip the lamdas and then remove them from the exhaust afterwards as i didnt want to risk rounding them off, the janspeed exhaust was a perfect fit - it didnt blow at all, i didnt use any paste i just bolted it all up when it was in postion 1st time round, i started it up and the revs went straight to the red! i thought "oh no its the lamdas playin up" and started to flap, then i noticed the accelerator cable had been pulled out of place and was pulling tight! phew! i sorted that and then started her up. Well the noise that greeted me was bloody lovely - i finally had that V8 sound that ive been after but at the same time when on tickover its quieter than the standard exhaust just a slight V8 rumble from the exit pipe, ive got just what i wanted - a nice quite runner for my missus (and how she drives it) but when you want to put your foot down your greeted with that lovely V8 rumble, and if only you could have seen my face the other day, windows open coming down a single track hill in 2nd, 7 foot stone walls either side, the popping from the exhaust was stunning and reminded me of the sound you get from the big american V8s:) its quiet inside the cab also and not at all "boy racer" sounding which ive been desperately trying to avoid. any way i guess you can tell im pretty chuffed, the only problem i now have is you can now hear the engine clearer and its def making a slightly dodgy ticky sound from the drivers side of the engine - maybe the cause of the dead cat? Hmmmm:confused:

forgot to ask why the reservations with the K&N? any input will be greatly appreciated as this is my 1st attempt at tweaking a Disco.

Well done, :D I didn't do the Y pipe, you got to the bolts on the manifold ok then. The rest is easy I know, it's very satisfying job.
Did you unbolt the hangers? and has it got a round cherry bomb type of tailpipe?

K&N... It comes up a lot in most of the LR forums, so i'm repeating what i have read, the opinion is that the oil can gum up the works in the air flow sensor also they don't filter as well as the paper filter, they are not designed to do that but to allow more air into the engine.

I use one on my 1976 2 ltr hobby car, but thats had the works as far as engine tuning goes and it has webber carbs.

Ps. I don't think u can "tweek" very much the engine managment will alter any changes you do back to the default setting, although the engine is/seems more responsive, my tickover has gone up by 50rpm

Regards

yeah i got to the bolts ok thanks to a knuckle my old man had and lots of WD40, 1 bolt snapped off at the very end but luckilly there was enough thread to get another nut onto it, i didnt undo the hangars and yes its a cherry bomb style rear silencer, it finishes diagonal to the back of the car not straight back and down like the original.
I think it has become more responsive but it could just be that it sounds a lot more sporty now and the old exhaust was so knackerd anything would have been an improvement,
with regards to the K&N, the oil you refer to do you mean the oil thats on it when you buy it or the solution you can use to service/clean the filter? I mainly bought it for its unlimited/very long lifetime - like the exhaust - and the BF Goodrich ATs for that point. If i need to replace something i like to upgrade it or better still replace it with a part that means i hopefully wont have to replace it again for a very very long time.
what will be the symptoms if the air flow sensor starts to clog up just so i can keep an eye out for the problem? cheers

Hi OK you have a similar system to mine, yes the tail pipe tucks away nicely.
It's the same oil on a new K&N as that which u will use when u service yours, the filter should last a life time. Problems would show up a with the engine misfiring but I haven't read anything specific on that one.

Ive had my system for a year now, the heat has changed the colour of the pipe but the mid and tailbox/pipe are shining, still as new.

Again, I'm well pleased with my exhaust.

Regards

Yeah my tailpipe is going "rainbowy" at the mo, i think the entire look and sound of the system is very Jap, is janspeed a jap exhaust? yeah i'm well chuffed aswel, i seem to be taking the disco out at every oppurtunity instead of my van just to listen to it, costs more in fuel but sounds bloody great! god am i sad or what.
