Hi to all I am new to this forum so please be gentle with me!!
Have a 1995 Disco 300Tdi manual with the following gearbox problems

1. No 4th gear there seems to be something stopping this gear engaging.
2. Graunche when changing from 2nd to 3rd can be helped by dipping the clutch for 2 seconds then selecting 3rd.

A new clutch has been fitted one month ago due to loss of all gears.
The mileage is only 69000 and it had a mainshaft replacement when it was 2 years old after the splines chewed up.

I have fitted a new clutch slave and master cylinder after advice from a local independant Landrover specialist which seems to make selecting gears easier.

I removed the gearbox drain plug and this was full of iron filings possibly not removed when gearbox shaft failed? The fluid was black instead of red ATF fluid when I drained it!!!
I refilled the box with new ATF and an American product which claims to help tired old boxes work a bit better this only helped to remove a rumbling niose when the cluch pedal was pressed.
Whilst raised at the front on ramps I noticed that all gears inc 4th could now be selected with ease? but when on level ground 4th cannot be selected?
I am thinking of getting a recon gearbox but would welcome any advice from you Landrover experts.
HELP!!!

????????????????
Not got a clue what you are on about:confused:

If your clutch is knackled, it's slips!
Gearbox main shaft splines wear where it goes into transfer box!
The R380 gearbox is prone to eating syncros which make gear selection interesting!

Reet.
Where is reverse on yo box? Left and up or right and down?
Check the gearbox oil. Maybe change it.
Can you get it in gear with the engine off?
Replace the clutch fluid.

There is a problem with using ATF Dexron IId in the manual box R380. Apparently the synchros need a certain amount of friction in order for them to work properly. Unfortunately ATF is not formulated to provide this, so lots of owners have gear selection problems.

The oil to use in R380 box is MTF (Manual Trans Fluid) 94, formulated by Texaco for LR.

Using this oil or another called EVO1 from Difflock.com will improve change quality and in the case of EVO1 will improve the lifetime/quietness and efficiency of the gearbox.

To be honest using ATF in a manual gearbox is a bit pants, even though LR recommends it.

Moving onto gear selection, where does the gear lever sit, when in neutral? In between 3rd and 4th or between 1st and 2nd?

Good luck
Dave
