Hi, has anyone a definitive answer I wonder. The workshop manual says get the oil warm, go through the box several times (handbrake on!) and the check level with box in neutral. The handbook says start in park, leave in park and check while cold. The dipstick says check when cold with box in neutral. Which one do I go by? Thanks, look forward to the (probably) various opinions

On the newer ZF HP22e boxes, the level is checked cold with the engine idling after going through the gear positions and back to neutral.
I'm inclined to think the HP22 non electronic version is the same.

Always done mine ('86 RRC EFI with ZF4HP22 non electronic) by
Start from cold,
Let the engine idle stabilise (engine will warm up but fluid will stay cold)
Select through all gears.
Neutral & idling
Check fluid level.

Thanks Datatek, I've appreciated your advice in the past so I'll try this next time I'm up at the farm where it's currently 'stored'

Some auto box dip sticks have both hot and cold level check marks Volvo for instance. Yours is checked cold as said by others.
