14J or 200tdi

HI guys was looking to buy a defender 110 for a project and found one although am not to sure if it is a 14j or 200tdi engine can you anyone tell me significant differences sorry a bit naive on the engine scene.

Are you sure its the 14J? The 14J is the sherpa engine, the 12J is the naturaly aspirated 2.5 diesel, the 14J is identical except the timing chest and belt/idlers. Its not water tight.

Then there is the 19J the same as the 12J except with a turbo and boost actuated injection pump.

The 200tdi is the next one up from the 19J.

If it's a defender it'll be a 200 or later. If it's a 90 it'll be either a 19J (TD) or 12J (NA) or a 2.1/4 petrol. (oh or a v8 but probly not!) - defender was also the start of the 200/300 series.

Its a defender for sure. 1988 although could have had the engine replaced.

Thought it was called a 110 or a 90 until the defender in the 1990's

they were simply called 90/110 until 1990 H when the 200tdi Defenders were introduced. tis a common thing for people to call them all Defenders.
if its 1988 it will be a 110, probably 19j (turbo) but as you say the engine could have been changed. if the oil filler cap has a breather pipe on ot it is not a tdi.

then it's NOT a defender for sure!

TDi has a screw in oil cap, TD just sits in the hole. TDI goes up hills, TD doesn't.

Yeah - I know - it must be the cold!

If it was the sherpa engine it would be the 15J - the 14J doesn't exist.

There are 10/12/15/19J's

It will probably be the 19J, BUT to be honest it could be anything because these engines are so frequently swapped and changed.

Only if they've moved the front seats and made all the other, admittedly fairly minor, mods that were made when it became a Defender

If you put dolly parton's tits on dot cotton, you still got dot cotton whatever you tell people! Pre 1990 is a 90 and after it's a defender (unless it's a series!)
