I have just bought a 2005 HSE freelander and need to fit a 12s socket for caravan towing. It already has the 12n fitted.
I have a few Q's, so here goes:
1. Is there a plug to simply plug into at the rear (if so where will I find it)?
2. If not, do I need a smart relay for the switching of the charge to the van?
3. If I do no.2, is there a suitable power supply at the rear rather than running a 27amp new cable all the way to the battery?

I fitted a 12s to my last car, and needed one of these smart relays 12s.jpg but had to run the power cable through the cab, and it was a nightmare!

If anyone can advise it would be appreciated.

Thanks
Daz

That is for the 12N towing electrics

The 12S requires additional wires run through the cabin - or under the vehicle

There is a full kit - voltage sensitive relay and two relays for the fridge electrics and split charge. (Red and Blue wires to socket), all wiring, sockets and metal brackets.

I paid only £40 for mine - have a look on ebay and also some of the parts suppliers. It could have been M&M 4x4 who had them for about £40 or mail order 4x4.

If I see them again i'll repost.

Regards,

Steve

The smart relay is the way to go. The cable for the single wire to the front should come with the relay. Pass the wire from the passenger compartment at the top left corner into the engine bay through the gromit that is already there and has a nipple like moulding on it for extra wires ( I put the driving lamp wiring through the same one). Then hide the wire under the door sill trim and the rear trim panel. Jobs a good 'un.

I have just done the same on mine. There is no cable in the loom of a high enough current to drive a full 12S socket. I bought a rear power amp wiring kit to give me a 30A cable, fuse holder etc. As has been said under the trim is fairly straightforward, I included a couple of additional cables as spares along with audio leads to make up a complete loom while I was doing the work. I'm glad I did as I have already used one for a work lamp in the boot.

I dropped on a Landie Genuine 12s kit on ebay for £22. Did a great job but was a T*&t to fit. It is a pre wired loom that goes to battery and fuse box at the front and has traditional relays mounted behind boot panels. The instructions were good and it gave a proffesional job. I probarbly wouldn't have paid the £80+ full price though.
I've had problems in the past with "smart" relays failing or pulsing on and off at tickover (although the most epic failure was on a ford fitted one on a brand new Ranger that they connected up back to red to black / black to red - blew to bits! and the indicators were the wrong way round!). I used to carry a spare one just in case.
