Hello,

I'm new here and registered as I have a problem with the fuel pump. It is busted and it needs replacing (the relay is working, but the pump is completely dead). I have a Defender 110 TD5 CCPU/DCPU.

The problem is that it is standing in a park space, so I want to avoid having to try lower the fuel tank, but instead accessing it from the top. Is it as simple as removing the load space floor? I guess there are two, the first one with screws and the next one with rivets? If I remove these I have direct access to the pump?

Thanks for the help!

/Lars

By the way, :welcome: and expect lots of abuse from the Landyzone residents - make sure you give them plenty back :D.

It might be worth checking to see if you are getting 12volts supply at the pump too.

For what it costs, get a new seal too (the big green one). And you may need the patience of a saint to get the thread started on the retaining ring when you are refitting it. good luck.

Here's mine...

Either remove the floor or cut an access hole. I initially cut a hole to get to my pump but when I had Pressbrake weld me on a new rear crossmember I drilled the rivets and took the complete floor out so he had good access to remove the tank and for welding. Makes getting to lots of other stuff easy too. Just resecured the floor back with pop rivets so getting it out again just means taking the heads off the rivets rather than drilling all the OEM spot welds which took several hours of cursing.

Thanks, and thanks for the welcome!

Very useful pics Five Pots. I will most probably drill a hole as well as removing the floor sounds like too much work as it is welded and not only riveted.

And thanks for the tip with the seal, I will get one of these as well. Is it part number WGQ500020? I found a couple of these on Ebay.

Thanks,
Lars

Ok, we have cut a hole. I don't have the pump yet, but we tried to remove the old one. The fuel lines where easy but we couldn't find out how to remove the electrical plug without destroying something (will look at the new pump when it arrives).

What did you do about the vent pipe? Mine is quite rusty and I'm not sure where it goes or if it has any function.

Thanks,
Lars

Ratty did a thread on this last year............. Hate to say it ( not really:p) did you do a search?

Yes, I actually did :). I didn't find any mention of any vent pipe though, and it looks on one of the pictures that someone just have a screw in its place. Not sure what it does and if it is needed as I can't see where the pipe goes. I do have a Webasto fitted but I don't think it has anything to do with that?

Thanks,
Lars

You probably had your search narrowed to much....... Broaden it with like td5 tank pump or something like that

The vent pipe is usually blanked over but where a diesel heater is fitted it is then opened up for the feed pipe to access the tank. I put the screw in the top on mine to minimise the dirt that could get down into the tank. It is the pipe you have to be careful not to break.

On mine the electrical plug just lifted off (with a bit of effort), I didn't need to squeeze the sides or anything.

Hi again,

We managed to replace it this weekend. It took some patience to say the least, and a lot of cursing :).

One problem was that when we looked at the new pump in its original packaging from Siemens/VDO, the flotation device had broken off from the main unit. Fortunately we could use the old one and move it to the new.

When having done that we went on fitting the new pump. One good thing to know is that the rubber seal should be put in place before trying to fit the pump the last bit (the rubber seal still needs to sit around the pump but not at the top, because you can't push the pump down with the seal on and get it to fit). It took some cursing to find that out. After that everything went well.

I fitted an aluminium plate over the cut hole, and fixed it with some sealing paste and rivets. Looks like new! :) And after some purging it started without problems and runs fine. Except that it looses power when reaching 100 km/h, probably wastegate related. Will check that next weekend. Thanks for the help!

What are the dimensions to cut this square? I have a 110 ccpu and I want to take my pump out to inspect the filters. How did you cover it later?
Will I have to cut the reinforcements under the floor?
