110 Puma engine cold start

Hi Guys

so every winter my def 110 puma starts and the pulsates sometimes cuts out, sometimes a large cloud of black smoke will appear I just thought it was a dirty DPF as as soon as its a little warm its totally fine .. this year is the first time ive had a straight pipe and it is still happening so there goes that theory .. anyone got any ideas ?

I'd suspect a glow plug fault - either in the components between the battery and glow plugs (fuse, relay, timer) or the plugs themselves. Does the glow plug light on the dash illuminate before a cold start? What year defender (I have wiring diagram for 2012 onwards)

hi mate..
ah no lights for plugs .. its a 2010 puma engine ... first time it actually did it this evening . quite a bit of smoke too ..
 
I don't have wiring diagrams for the 2010 (2.4) engine, if you need them they can be found online, free download. You will also need the relevant electrical reference library, also available as above.
