110 dashboard upgrade

Hi all. My 110 dashboard has been falling apart for a few months now and I cannot bear the view of it anymore. I am thinking of replacing it with one of the later TD5 ones, (2003 / 2007) hat have the central console. Has any of you folks ever fitted a TD5 dashboard onto an earlier vechicle, if so is that an impossible task or is it manageable?

You'll find a lot of info on ths site and in previous threads:

Given the complexity of some of the 2002 dash switch wiring etc you might find a Mud Dash (www.mudstuff.co.uk) a simpler job. You'll be able to use more generic swtichgear with simpler fitting.

Hey Stevebot - Apologies for the delay in writing back - Thanks very much for your advice - that has been very well received. I have been given a full 2003 TD5 dashboard that I will attempt to install, so the information you passed on will be of sterling use. That will be a very interesting endeavour when complete on my 1987 110! - thanks for your time and regards

Thanks folks - that all sounds pioneering stuff. FYI Plan of action is:

a) examine all mimimum parts requirement from various manuals downloaded

b) establish what is the minimum number of parts required in order to assemble the basics, so far:

• • Lower tray
  • Central console
  • Internal vent covers
  • Crash panel

I'll see if the back / brackets support it, Idealy i want to avoid rebuilding the brackests
c) I'll stay away from a re-wiring exercise for now. I'll just re-direct the Radio wiring loom to the central console.

Hi All - I am delighted to confirm that yesterday I was able to execute a full dashboard replacement on my 1987 110. I took out the old one and replaced it with a facelifted 2003 TD5 with centre console.

It took about 7 hours and in the prcess i was able to also do some rustproofing and sound proofing. The vabin now looks more modern and - more importantly, tidier. I only have pics of the finished item. I still have about 1.5 hrs work to connect the radio and the 3 switches on the right hand side (had to drill the opening to keep the 3 switches).

The job did not need the use of the large TD5 metal support bracket, which would have required fabricating modified brackets and further drilling, with the risk of getting all measures non 100% aligned.

The end result is 95% perfect, with some minor cutting required to the opening louvres where the vent handles pass. The required parts are effectively only: lower / mid tray, / top tray, centre console. All other parts can be sourced from the existing vehicle.

Hi All - As per above, here's a pic of my 1987 LR 110 fitted with a 2003 TD5 dashboard. As mentioned this was a 6 hours job, including bulkehead anti rust paint spray (Plasti-Cote),soundproofing (Ivanohoe / Dyna-Mat) and fitting TD5 original footwell sound deadining carpet. I am well below any average LR DIYer, so provided you can source a good dashboard (£100 / 150 on eBay) that's very easy job for a Saturday morning. Needless to sa, the cabin is now tidy and considerably quieter, it is even possible to have a normal ocnveration with the passengers!

That looks very neat. Congratulations on a job well done.

Ha ha thanks i feel very proud, yes the dashboard now loks the part. Incidentally I also now did the soundproofing and thermal proofing of the entire roof and bulkhead. I can listen to music and talk (with engine turned off ha ha!).
I'll post piccies of the insulation. Incidentally if you know about engine repalcement (Disco300 TDi+R380 replacing Isuzu2.8TD+Lt85) I'll be delighted to hear, see my other threads. Thanks again, GG

Hi,

I suspect that a full upgrade would be quite a challenge requiring changes to the wiring loom etc.

If you want the full factory dash I would suggest a scrapped vehicle would be the best source.

For an easier, bespoke upgrade how about this: Iron Goat Four Wheel Drive Products ? You'll be able to do your own wiring and have no problems with the OEM switches etc which can be a bind given their peculiar wiring etc (see my thread on a fog light upgrade using the OEM forg switch). If you need more space to add switches etc a Mudpod from www.mudstuff.co.uk is a useful bit of kit and the guys are great with advice and sorting out what you need.

My 110 has already had the dashboard upgraded by the previous owner. However, they neglected to fit the rear wiper and rear screen wash meaning I have the old round switches flopping about on the dash tray. I've just bought buttons for the new dash but upon attempting to detach the old switches and wire up the new ones, it turns out I'm missing the little plastic clips that connect into the back of the switches.

Can someone tell me what they're called and where I can get some from?
