110 advice

Hiya folks,

I have been looking @ some defenders for the past week, i am looking @ spending 2K but i guess i can extend to 2.5K.

I came across this:

Defender 110 county 200TDI 12 seats I am picking up my new XS tomorrow so am letting my trusty old Defender go.

It is a G reg (1990). It has had a disco 200TDI engine and box installed early last year. It has 12 seats all in remarkable condition, no rips, holes or stains, together with side steps, front light guards and heightened suspension. I have owned the car for 14 months and it has been great. Starts on the button, drives great, and has a whole file of history/receipts.

This year I have had a CD player fitted, Witter adjustable tow-bar. Big service including belts done in July 07 together with outriggers and a new rear cross-member fitted. So i called the guy up and asked him what he was looking for, eventually he cracked and said he would settle for £2500 and carried on telling me about the defender.

One worrying thing got me is that he mentioned that the temperature gauge is faulty and after 2-3 min it in the red or way over, but there is nothing to worry about. Now to me who knows jack about cars thats very worrying, what advice can you guys give me on that one?

Oh he claims it had a Nissan engine in but now has a 200 that has done 90K.

£2500 sounds like a good deal for a 110 with a 200TDi engine.
One of the things that seems to come up repeatedly is that the old temp guage for a 2.5TD does show a 200TDi running way too hot, so I would say the guage in the cabin needs changing for a 200TDi one.
Ideally, take someone along who knows a bit about the 200TDi and 110's and get it checked over before buying.

Me? I'd have appeared in his doorway with the cash as soon as I hung up the phone.

An I'd have gone with a nammer an knocked fook out of the bits of the chassis that haven't bin replaced. If it's all solid two an a narf grand is about the right price, though the engine temp could work out expensive if it int the sender thats nertled. The other thing to ask is why has it needed three engines in it in the same time that mines only had one, seats an CD players, side steps an lift kits don't amount to bog all if you end up with a rotten chassis an a knackered engine.

it's not a Defender - it does seem to have had a hard life if it's now on at least its third engine, however it does look fairly straight

thanks for all the advice,

Just spoken to the bloke again and he confirmed that his mate bought it with a blown Nissan engine in it and thats when it was replaced with the 200. As for why 3 he cant tell me.

And he also now just mentioned that it he snapped a cam belt and the whole engine was redone and he has a receipt for that. Is that good news or bad?

As long as the engine has done some miles since the rebuild and the receipt is real then that's not a problem, at least 3 engines and the fact that he seems eager to get rid of it isnt usually a good sign - but then there are a few bargins to be had out there

where is the landy ?, if it's not been said before take someone with you whos knows what to look for

I'm in Reading he is in CO93RE [SIZE=-1]St, Halstead.

He has kindly sent me new photos which are not to great.

I unfortunately don't know anyone into their landy's or who could give me sound advice on one.

Is any one in that area willing to come out and inspect it? Obviously if there is a fee involved I do not mind for some sound advice.

Please see the two new attachments of what he has sent me.

niffin to worry about in those pics, not that they show much - but it's odd that it's been through 3 engines yet still has it's headlining intact - a pic of one of the outriggers or underneath the windscreen, or the bottom of the battery box would help as these are a very easy to spot sign of problems - rust around the windscreen being the most problematical to resolve

but for that sort of money you can't really go too wrong based on the pics shown so far - i'd buy it at that price after just seeing those pics

Now your just being mischievous, seeing as its had a few engines Id have thought (wrongly in this case perhaps) that the rest of the vehicle had been used and abused having what looks like the orginal lining still intact does give a bit of a clue to it maybe having had a slightly sheltered life.

if i lived closer i would tell yer to walk away, then go and get the fooker fer me sen, it looks pretty good fer the money, maybe the fust engine was abused an the next two were already on their way out when they were fitted

fer 2.5 grand it looks like a good buy.
however, if you buy any 2.5 grand motor, you can't expect it to be perfect and last for ever! so, always buy at a price where you've got some money in reserve for the inevitable repairs needed that only come to light after a few weeks of ownership.

Go and have a look have a poke at the chassis and on the front bulkhead If it looks clean and there no rot and the engine doesn't smoke that buy it. Take someone with you. worse case scenario is you might have to learn to repair engines but parts are cheap enough and they're easy engines to work on.

dont be confused it'll probably be a good buy - just make sure you have a good look at the bulkhead at the base of the windscreen cos that pic does show either mud or rust, and it's theres that much rust on the seam there'lll be plenty more hidden underneath it
