iv only been used to buying fully synthetic for the last few years for my vectra....
but now i own a freelander....what is the preferred 10/w40 oil

mineral ?
semi/syn ?
fuly/syn

is there any other grades that can be used that may be better for the engine?

any to be honest but change regulary ,fully syn lasts longer than the others ,oil does two things lubricate and clean all the by -products of combustion end up in the oil ,so imo its better to use any but change regulary

I use WOLF fully synthetic in our BMW's

Meets BMW LL-04 spec so should be top notch stuff and is not so expensive

Mine has for some time (years) had a leaky crank seal, so my oil changes are continuous - its not so bad that its causing problems for other folks but it does need topping up every month or so. I just use any semi syn I can see but mostly Halfords in a greeny blue plastic bottle.

I use Carlube 5w40 full synthetic in my KV6 powered cars. But it's fine in all petrol Freelanders. I get it from The Range at £22 for 5 liters which is less than I can get a similar oil with my motor factor trade discount!!

Should the 1.8 have fully sympathetic? - too expensive for me! with leak!

I have the same main dealer fit option, but mine needs topped up every 3 months.

Gets worse, unfortunately but not worth pulling the gearbox/flywheel off for on its own - wait till clutch needs attention.
