hello
:welcome2: i new to this , and been on my mind to make a 100" defender , i got a good itea what i want it to look like but , any one know how much trubble it is , the best enginge 200tbi or 300tdi etc etc ....
thanks

Hi, with regard to the engine, it's a personal choice but do a search on here. You will see lots of pros and cons for both engines. It might be worth buying the DVD of A 4x4 Is Born, Mark Evans builds a v8 100 inch defender on a rangy chassis. Good to watch too. :D

hey thanks guys , and yes i seen it all , i tryed taping as much as i could on home and leisure but give up so bought the dvd and pic cd :) that what got me thinking , so thought disco 200tdi / 300tdi rotton boby / body off , mega work to chassie , deffender body work body on (is if so simple ) i seen one down by me last week looked mint

What exactly is the point of a 100 incher these days. It used to be the only way to get a "proper" landy on coils but then the factory wised up and brought out the 90 and 110. I just can't see why anyone would want one now.

my reackoning was why not
had fecked disco and some fender bits kicking about
saying tat its never got finished and weighed chassis in and fitting injun to mi 90 then gonna start again with another disco chassis

but it gives me a reason ter tinker and drink beer

More to the point. Apart from less rust. Why would ya wanna stick a cold draughty, rattling noisy defender body shell on a disco chassis?? My 100" landy chassis, has a lovely comfy discovery body and interior on it and it's great. :D :D

maybe coz 100" is a compomise between a 90" which is good ofroading but a bit more bumpy and a 110" which has a better ride, but is too long for certain offroad activities?

Dare I say it - there will be severe problems with getting it registered for the road, if you chop a Defender chassis and either extend a 90 or shorten a 110 chassis. If you use a Disco or RRC chassis then you'll need to make sure its legit (not just a spares/repairs jobbie) with a V5 and that you KNOW the registration number, and that its not declared scrapped (all of those things will stop road legal registration) - and it will wear the Disco/RRC registration plate.

So, if the 'donor' vehicle is half way good, then basically you're rebodying a Disco, rather than 'building' your own Defender, as such. So serious consideration should be given to simply fixing up the Disco, it would be 3x less work etc.

I'm not an expert but as I understand it, the chassis-body mounts are different so you'd need to cut off old ones from a defender chassis (or fabricate your own), weld them on, and in the exact right position. Also isn't there another cross member, for the bulkhead panel, and welding on a cross member means strictly, it will need the IVA test???

Worth checking out the red tape on something like this, otherwise you might well end up with a very expensive piece of scrap metal at the end of it all.

Yep but why bodge a 90/110 body to fit summat that has a perfectly good?? bodyshell already.

since when was a old disco body a good body shell?

apart from the rotten frount & rear arches, rotten sills, hole that was once a boot floor and foot wells you can stamp through. there is the huge rear overhang and a lot of car infrount of the frount wheels. Then theres all the problems with the central locking never locking all the doors, the sun roof leaking. Its bloody heavey, and hard top replace pnales when damaged.

Defender body is a proven simple modular design that hasent chaged much for 50 years. discos..now on 3 body shape in 20 years?

100" is fanstic off road, iv had a load of discos, and driven right will happly out preform a 90 on hill climbs and in the twisty stuff.

IVA wise if you search around the word seams to be if you build a defender to factory spec's (suspention/interia/ bumpers ect) you will pass the iva no problem. then mod it after.

Cut the rear overhang off and you'll need to relocate fueltank both will trigger an IVA.

Buy a welder and damaged panels are a sign it's been used properly. I've had 90.110's and disco's you won't do anything with a std 90 or 110 that a std disco won't do. HYbrids are a waste of effort and money.

It's all about having something unique. If it was about money no one would have Land Rovers. I say go for it, after all we plough money into our landys that we will never get back and it's not increasing value.
