10 year service

Hi guys, my freelander 2 is 10 years old this year and thinking about getting it serviced, but had a few scary stories about £800-£900 . Seems a lot of money to spend on a 10 year old car, I wonder how many get moved on at this age. TBH I'm wondering if it's worth spending £900 on a car that I can only get £3500 p/X. What should I do ?

What needs doing? A standard service is engine oil and all filters, but in the long term you'd want to change the various gearbox oils, brake fluid and coolant. I don't know exactly what a garage would charge, but it should nowhere near £900. None of the jobs require more than a normal set of tools and skills.

10 years is airbag modules I believe, according to manufacturers blurb, plus all oils and brake fluid coolant

I forgot about the airbags. But seriously - I might get in trouble here - all Freelander 1's are at least ten years old now. How many have had that done?

Seatbelt pretensioners 'spring' to mind too.

I've been told, engine oil & all filters, gearbox oil, transfer box oil, diff oil, haldex oil & filter, brake fluid, auxiliary belt and timing belt. Timing belt already done on mine so a small saving but 2 independents on the Web are quoting £850. How much is oil nowadays,

Sorry - I didn't spot it was a FL2.

If you're only expecting £3500 for it, I'll buy it!

I don't know about the Haldex stuff, what you're talking about is mainly undoing some drain plugs, letting the oil out and pouring new in. Oil, roughly, is £5 per litre. Hopefully a FL2 type will come on here to advise you, but my gut feeling is, £850 for what you describe is an enormous rip-off.

If the timing belt has been done already. Then there's no way that it'll cost £800+ for a fluid service.
I expect all the fluids will be needed, including the Haldex coupling, which isn't cheap.
Air bags will be 15 years anyway.
So there's nothing that I can see would justify that huge charge.

Totting up the costs of fluids and filters from my preferred supplier. I'd be looking at around £200 for all the fluids and filters.

10 years or 150000 miles , which ever comes first

I assume the timing belt, idler and water pump are a large part of that. As Nodge says, the rest is just changing fluids and filters, which you could do yourself for £200-odd.

... for example, the prices for a Freelander 1 service on the same website hover around the £300-400 mark, but the cost of the actual parts/fluids for a FL1 service is around £60-70. It's all labour, which is highly expensive, especially at a main dealer.

Belt. I cannot imagine why you'd introduce such a time bomb into an interference engine, but there must be a good reason.

It actually has both a belt and a chain, like the D3 TDV6 and many other TD engines do. The belt takes timed drive to one cam. The chain takes the drive to the other cam from the belt driven cam.
Only the belt has a specific change interval.

My FL2 is 8 yrs old ..... so 10 yrs is not far away. Assuming normal servicing has been done , you have all flexible brake hoses to replace (if not done at year 6), auxiliary drive belt, timing belt , tensioner, and idler pulley .... auto fluid, auto case oil ,and rear final drive oils to do: and coolant fluid .... I guess that's a good 6 hours work at £130 per hr = £780 and the cost of material wold easily bring that up to £900+. Even if you do it yourself there is a cost of , say, £300 for materials .....

Exactly what I thought....being honest if I knew a car that long I'd be loathed to get rid of it. You could change it for something else that's an unknown and spend way more than £900

As a newbie and thickey I'm having a little trouble navigating this brilliant site. Whilst not being lazy I'm recovering from a broken arm so typings a pain ( litterely ) and crawling under my 2000 diesel is a no no so I wonder on this thread I could ask you a cheeky question ?
Its kinda related, I've got coolant loss and now can see a steady drip under the left side of engine whilst looking under bonnet. As said can't get under so am guessing water pump ?
I'll be at the complete mercy of the local garage so wondered if anyone knows the book time for pump replacement and if I can't find in service history would you recommend belt replacement at same time ? Any help would be appreciated.
