Hey folks the hippo is due a oil change soon I'm just after some thoughts on what brands some of you folks are using? I.e have you had some good results from a particular brand? Shuch has better fuel economy, smoother running etc etc. it currently has millers 10/40 in there ATM and tbh it's running ok.

It's for a 2.0l di btw. Cheers

If you buy 1 brand and stick with it for 200k miles and have another Gay lander using a different oil and drive 200k
to do a comparrision let us know in 40 years.

If you don't want to do that they use a good quality oil, Shell rotella T is my choice. Never knew there was oils out there to improve MPG. Damn this LZ is a great site, as the stuff you learn daily. Never to late to teach a old dog I guess;)

5/40 fully synthetics on offer at euro parts for £12.50 for 5 litres, thats what i'll be using as just bought 10 gallon

Interesting that one, isn't 5/40 the wrong grade to use?
Engine oil - Diesel vehicles
Use a 0W/30, 5W/30, 5W/40, 5W/50, 10W/30, 10W/40 or 10W/60 oil meeting specification ACEA:
A3 and B3, and having a viscosity band recommended for the temperature range of your locality.
Engine oil temperature ranges
0W/30 will protect from -30ºC to 35ºC.
5W/30 will protect from -30ºC to 35ºC.
5W/40 will protect from -30ºC to 50ºC.
5W/50 will protect from -30ºC to 50ºC.
10W/30 will protect from -10ºC to 30ºC.
10W/40 will protect from -10ºC to 50ºC.
10W/60 will protect from -10ºC to 50ºC

As the OP is refering to the older Rover engine not the Td4,

Oil specification
For diesel engines:
10W/40 or 15W/40 engine oil
meeting RES.22.OL.PD2 or
ACEA B2:96

I use morris or fuchs w10-40 in my td4 only because its on tap ! But I,d use any half decent 10-40 oil if I'm honest .just change it at regular intervals job done:)

That's right I have the older rover engine, it says in the manual to use 10/40 what if u used 5/40 in there? Since it is a fully snyth surely in theory it's a better grade to use?

5/40 will do exactly the same job as 10/40 the 5 just means it flows better than 10/40 at colder temps, but at the temps 10/40 works at 5/40 works just the same, did that make sense:confused:

As long as the oil meets the ACEA specs it will be ok.
LR service schedule is not fixed at 12 months/12,000 miles, it can be as low as 1 month/1000 miles, depenent on how arduous the conditions of use.
As James said, the best oil in the world is no use if left in too long.

are you serious about 12k miles for oil change????

Yes I understand what the grades mean, but land rover don't state in the service Manuel that 5/40 is ok to use, the 5w just means it's thinner from cold but couldn't that cause problems for a engine not design for that grade? With a 5w grade being thinner from cold could mean oil seapping into places it's not suppose to be

this is what Autodata 3.40 says about L series oil and 5w40 is not listed
