Following on from a previous thread finally got the thing running but sounds very lumpy almost like it's blowing through an exhaust gasket ( it isn't). Looks suspiciously like water vapour from the exhaust, so decided to try a compression test, results from cylinder 1 to 4 are 150psi 170psi 195psi 195psi not sure whether this is indicative of hgf, however I'm leaning that way!!

The low compression pressure could just be down to valves in cylinder 1. I'd expect to see 175 to 185 in a good cylinder. 195 sounds a bit high, but could just be a slight over read in the gauge.
If it's holding its coolant, then the HG is fine.;)

Agree with Nodge - there is a pressure leak on cylinder 1. If this were a head gasket problem you'd be loosing coolant due to pressurization of the coolant system through combustion gases escaping past the fire ring.

The bottom end of the K-series is generally bomb proof (although if over revved, the pistons and the piston rings can fail - but I doubt that this is a problem frequently found on Freelanders?) - so I'd look at the top end.

Is it burning oil? Blue smoke?
