Am picking up another F1 tomorrow. That makes 6!! Spares or repairs and cheap with fault "gearbox has gone". Clearly the gearbox hasn't gone as I can see it in photos!! More questions gave a bit more clarity. "Gear selector not engaging gears". Don't know whether it is linkage or internals but anyone know any dodges to get it into any gear to move it?? 2003 k series. Thanks.
 
It will still go into gear if the IRD has failed - just won't transmit drive.

You could be on a winner - sounds like a failed selector mechanism, but you won't know until you see it for yourself ;)
 
:eek::eek:Got it home safely. It is a bit of a shed to be honest but a 2004 facelift and engine seems good. Quick inspection reveals it goes into any gear with or without clutch down. Reverse lamps work so lever is connected to something! No drive or load detected in any gear. Vcu still fitted. Passenger airbag has exploded at some point in the past. Probably a spares car as panels bit bashed in places. Has £400 of new brakes apparently. Pictures soon. Covered in sticky substance. Hope it has been under a tree! :eek:

Any tests / ideas to narrow the loss of drive down a bit??
Clutch down or up it easily slips into each gear. Reverse lights work in reverse (I suppose that is something!). In gear and release clutch no load on engine noticed at all. Thinking it is internal selector problem and can't be IRD related as it wouldn't go into gear with clutch up if gearbox was alright - true??

Dunno how you're going to be able to check if its clutch, gearbox or IRD.

Maybe an endoscope through the fill plugs on the gearbox/IRD to see whats turning - could be messy and very dangerous! Would make a great vid though - till the thing got minced and left rubbish in your gearbox!
 
Ird failure wouldn't let gears be selected without clutch down? Will firstly get clutch operated and see what is happening at box end. Then maybe will go for camera mincing show for entertainment of all!!
 
My guess above seems about it! Pressing clutch pedal in car compresses fluid and no noticeable movement on clutch arm. So no connection between pedal and arm. BUT the clutch seems stuck in the disengaged position. Large wrench on release arm reveals that it isn't seized but only 1/4 inch movement on arm. Sounds wrong! What could have failed to jam arm releasing clutch? Can anyone tell me how much slave cylinder push rod should be showing with clutch pedal up please? This has about 1 shiny inch. This would help me see if the arm is stuck disengaging clutch. Thanks.
 
I can have a look on mine tomoz, but about an inch sounds right - that's about the length of those plastic ties you get on a new one so that it doesn't extend before you fit it and hit the peddle.

If its really clean, it may indicate the previous owner replaced it trying to solve clutch problems. On my parts car, the plastic ties were still attached, they obviously gave up trying yo fix it!
 
Surveyed this car and it really isn't worth saving. And believe me if I am saying that it is bad!! Every panel and every trim piece is damaged. Clutch release jammed. Even cracked wings and bumpers. If anyone wants a good 1.8 K engine, you can run it and then remove it if you want.. please let me know then it is for stripping and weighing!!!
 
Yes, as you know I don't give up lightly bit the general condition of this one is such that even after repair no one would want it!! Have listed in parts forum. Getting quite a collection of goodies now! Thinking of racking out a barn and stocking good used parts. Upcycle vehicles where you can and save parts from being crushed where you can't.
 
If you're not taking it on Andy, no one will!

I'm after a standard aerial (and aerial seal gasket!) - I know I'm working on a shark fin, but this is in case that cunning plan doesn't pan out! LOL
 
It would be fine as a car. Just brused and not very loved. If anyone wants it as it is give me a shout via pm.
 
Would be perfect as a green laner! Shabby chic is a good look in the countryside as the countryside tries to peel the paint off the car... LOL ;)

I'd be tempted, but I'd get shot!!!
 
Further investigation without taking anything to bits....clutch now operates from pedal after freeing it off. Still no drive at all. Might be clutch completely failed or selector internal to box. Gear lever sounds and feels connected. Anyone had failed selector mech in box?? Is it repairable if I heave the box out? Thanks.
 
More likely the clutch me thinks - but this sounds increasingly like a gearbox off the engine task. Failed clutch release bearing or fork?
