Hi. I just thought the following maybe of interest.
My 120K 1.8 R plate has been playing up recently with some intermittent issues. Firstly there has been an engine judder. This happens when either on a steady cruse or, most often, when slowing down with no pressure on the accelerator. Secondly the engine revs have been dropping to zero when the clutch is pressed you can normally dip the clutch to get it going again but its caught me out a couple of times when traveling slowly. I have also noticed the cooling fan running a couple of times when I stop nothing unexpected in that except it almost never appears to be needed.
So it looked like the IACV or TPS issue not really unexpected as the car is getting on a bit now. All of the above happen separately and intermittently. As I have another S plate 1.8 to look after which runs fine I swapped over the bits one at a time to see if I could identify the issue. Each time I did something (clean IACV etc) it seemed to solve things for a while but then the faults returned.
So I thought it may be a loom issue as there is a mention of this. Anyway after spending an hour or so going over the wiring around the area I happened to have the ignition turned on and heard the IACV operating as I prodded and poked around and moved the loom a bit. Eventually I found that the issue was at the ECU connector sixth wire down on the row of connects towards the front of the engine. This is pink and black and from the Haynes manual is a feed to all the sensors mentioned. It looks like the actual connector for this wire in the multiplug to the ECU is not making a good contact. The slightest touch and the connection seems to come and go.
So I have made the contact a bit tighter by biasing the contacts in the actual multiplug (very fine screwdriver down the back of the connector) and all appears OK now.
I have read a few posts with some of all of the above symptoms so I thought the I may help someone.
Oh yes, and I would burn it if I could afford the petrol ..
