Hi, I have very recently bought my first Land Rover, a 110 FFR winterised and waterproofed. After reading this thread:

Ex Mod 110's

I am very interested in finding out more abut these transfer boxes as it may give me a cheap alternative to engine swapping. I was planning to 200tdi at some point but i have a bulkhead that needs more serious attention!

Any help would be much appreciated,

Russ

Just make sure what T box you have got in there at the moment - should be some kind of marking on the back of it to tell you either the ratio or a serial no you could look up.

the 1.6:1 is a military only thing anyway. (I _think_). A normal 110 will have a 1.410:1 box, and a lot of military 110s will have that too. You might be wanting a ~1.2:1 Discovery box instead?

Just look at the sticker on your existing transfer box anyway. It's below the round PTO cover on the back left.

Nope not always although agreed you gotta check first. But depending on year and engine it could well be a 1.66 infact if its pre Tdi I would bet its a 1.66:1. There is a label behind the hand brake drum if your unlucky then its probably fallen off. Check the serial No.

Some LT77's have a lower ratio aswell just to make things more complicated. I have picked up a tranny box this morning 1.4:1 (still in boot) not even looked at it but you can have it for not alot of dosh say £30 if you collect or LZ courier it to you. Its a bit grubby. As I say its not been looked at yet but assuming it all works ok (will check tomorrow) you can have it for £30 I want it gone supposed to be a good one but I have too much stuff and it came with a job lot of other stuff I wanted instead. Jai

P.s I also have a bulkhead thats MOTable (think its been repaired at some point was going on a hybrid but change of plans) its actually better than my current one on my 90 but mine isnt that far gone to not be patched in situe. Its iin my garage don't want serious money for it just £50 might be easier to make this one 100% and then swap it all over save the mota being down for too long.

Thanks for all your replies, very very helpful! Just checked my box and it is indeed the 1.66:1 one. so im guessing the 1.4:1 would be a good next step? This is exactly the info i was after guys, thanks!

Sounds like a bargain! I was thinking of going down the galvanised route, so i didn't have to worry about it again. But for £50 im very tempted to go with that! where are you based?

Astonishing really! I would love to take this too, providing it works ok. I hope you're not too far away, posting could be really expensive, couldn't it?

Thanks again, Russ

Hove (Brighton) in Sussex, where are you?

I work around the Sussex/Surrey border too.

I'll go check the difflock and high low engages ok thats about all I can check TBH. Don't know its history although the man I got it from has the gearbox it was attached to in his lightweight. Might be able to deliver afterwork I suppose one evening if I can wangle it. Jai

Well company car fuel and I really need the space hench the price. Need to get enough room here to park a trailer and I have too much stuff in the way. I also have a rr lt230 and more than a few LT77's for V8's and an 88 inch coil chassis V8 efi engine. Mabe LZ courier service could help out if need be.

what's an lt230? well i'll take the transfer box and bulkhead no matter what. i'll even make the drive if i have to. sort it out next weekend? s that ok?

Yea no probs I'm supposed to be offroading next weekend at a comp and greenlaning on the Sat but I will get out of one of them. I'll get some pics up on ere so you can see what your getting exactly. The bulkhead has a brake master cylinder and a steering column attached already I think from memory. Jai

I'll make it an evening then, let me work something out, cheers!

Came out of a 2.5 N/a 90, believed to be reconned at some point. The main box had funky paint all over it. The guy only removed it from the 90 because he was offered a compelte 200tdi defender engine and gearbox. I didn't use it because i'm using a 1.2 disco box and i wanted the cross drilled input gear.

Had a look see its missing some bolts from the rear cover/pto cover. High range is ok as is neutral and centre diff seems to work as it should. I will try difflock and low later but all seems ok.
