Hi there, i got a 04 1.8 Td4 se (well, the wife has).
She's just told me that she's noticed, a couple of times, over the past few weeks that there has been a short, 15-20 second burst of smoke/steam from the passenger side of the engine bay when she has stopped the vehicle and turned the engine OFF. No visible smoke/steam when the engine running.
I've asked the relevant questions.
Temperature guage ? = Ok, i use the vehicle myself often, no probs.
How often ? = Every now and then !
Not losing oil or water from the expansion bay.
Could this be a purst of pressure release or maybe some water burning on the engine or manifold or is it a trip to good old Mick-anic ??
Thank for any help people.
Dazza.

Please explain, so my wife knows what to say when she gets the, "Your car's smoking, luv", at the petrol station again !

Oh aye !

its the "wifes" car eh  ;)

Its a heater that runs on fuel.hence the name
look at the front of the front nearside wheel and you;ll see a small exhauts stickin out the bumper .
Its there to warm up the car quicker when its cold .

;)

Excellent, i'll keep my wallet in the safe !
But why does it blow smoke when the engine is turned off ?

Don't know why, but once started they keep running for a period after you've turned them off. Its normal.
I'm not sure 0f the implications of a fuel burning heater in a filling station. I hope it is protected like a miner's safety lamp.

If you do a search there have been several threads about Fuel Burning Heaters (FBH) recently.
